Is there any way to determine why an Office 2019 installation that has been activated and working on the same PC for approximately seven years has suddenly lost its activation, or to recover its previous activation without the original 25-character product key? The PC and Office installation have not been moved to another computer.

    Hello nicholas vine

I understand how concerning it is for a previously activated Office 2019 installation to suddenly become unlicensed after working on the same computer for years.

You normally do not need the original 25-character product key if Office 2019 was previously redeemed to your Microsoft account.

    Please try the following:

    1. Sign in to Microsoft account Services & subscriptions using the Microsoft account originally used to purchase or activate Office. If you have other personal Microsoft accounts, check those as well.
    2. If Office 2019 is listed, open Word or Excel, go to File > Account, and sign in using that same account. If reinstalling is required, use the Install option shown beside Office 2019 on the Services & subscriptions page.
    3. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and check whether KB5002907 or Click-to-Run Update Support was installed around the time the activation was lost. This update has affected some Office 2016 and Office 2019 installations, although its presence must be confirmed before assuming it caused the problem.

You can also review Microsoft’s Office activation troubleshooting guidance.

Please be aware that support for Office 2019 ended on October 14, 2025. A valid license may still be reactivated, but Office 2019 no longer receives standard technical support or regular security updates, so upgrading to a supported Office version is recommended.

I hope the associated Microsoft account allows you to recover the activation.

Feel free reply back to this post if you need further assistance, I'll be happy to help.
