If the PC is running Windows 10 version 22H2 and meets the minimum hardware requirements, the upgrade to Windows 11 is free.
Recommended path:
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If the device is eligible, a Windows 11 upgrade banner appears.
- Select Download and install.
- Restart when prompted. The PC may restart several times.
If the upgrade does not appear in Windows Update:
- Confirm the PC is compatible by running PC Health Check and selecting Check now in the Windows 11 section.
- Make sure Windows 10 is updated to version 2004 or later for direct upgrade via Windows Update.
- Use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant from Microsoft’s website.
Before upgrading:
- Back up important files.
- Keep app sign-in information available.
- If needed, enable TPM or Secure Boot in BIOS/UEFI.
Important notes:
- If the PC is managed by an IT administrator, upgrading guidance may need to come from that administrator.
- If the PC does not meet Windows 11 requirements, there is no free upgrade path from unsupported versions of Windows to Windows 11.
