Can't see images in clipboard history any more, just three dots. Stopped working few weeks back, no one else in organization has the same problem. How to get the images to show again?

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Thank you for the detailed information and screenshot.

Based on the screenshot, Clipboard history is still opening and creating entries, but the image previews are not displaying correctly. Please try the following steps:

    1. Test with a small screenshot

Press Windows + Shift + S, capture a small rectangular area, and then press Windows + V to check whether the screenshot appears in Clipboard history.

Windows Clipboard history supports Text, HTML, and Bitmap formats, with a maximum size of 4 MB per item. If a smaller screenshot displays correctly, the issue may be related to the size or format of the copied image.

    2. Clear the Clipboard history

Go to: Settings > System > Clipboard > Clear clipboard data > Clear

You can also press Windows + V and select Clear all.

After clearing the history, take a new screenshot using Windows + Shift + S, then open Windows + V again and check whether the image preview appears.

    3. Reset Clipboard history

Go to Settings > System > Clipboard and turn Clipboard history off.

Restart the computer, turn Clipboard history back on, and then test again with a newly captured screenshot.

    4. Test with another Windows user profile

Since other users in your organization are not experiencing the same issue, if possible, test Clipboard history using another Windows user account on the affected computer.

This can help determine whether the behavior is associated with the current Windows user profile or affects the device more generally.

    5. Check Windows Update

Since the issue started only a few weeks ago, I also recommend checking Settings > Windows Update for any available updates. Install the available updates, restart the computer, and test Clipboard history again.

If text continues to appear normally but multiple small screenshots still show only ... after clearing and resetting Clipboard history, you can also consider reporting the behavior through Feedback Hub (Win + F), if Feedback Hub is available on your managed device.

    Try these checks in order:

    1. Verify Clipboard history is still enabled
      • Press Windows key + V.
      • If prompted, select Turn on.
      • Clipboard history is cleared after restart except for pinned items.
    2. Confirm the clipboard feature is allowed on the device
      • If this is a managed work PC, a policy can disable clipboard history entirely.
      • When the AllowClipboardHistory policy is disabled, Win + V should not show clipboard items and the Settings > System > Clipboard option is grayed out with a policy warning.
      • Since clipboard items are still appearing, this does not look like a full policy disable, but it is still worth checking Settings > System > Clipboard for any policy warning.
    3. Check the item type and size
      • Clipboard history supports Text, HTML, and Bitmap formats.
      • The size limit is 4 MB per item.
      • If the copied image is larger than 4 MB or not being placed on the clipboard in a supported format, it may not display correctly in clipboard history.
    4. Test with a fresh image copy
      • Copy a small image or take a small rectangular screenshot.
      • Then press Windows key + V.
      • If small images show correctly, the issue is likely related to the copied item’s size or format.
    5. Clear the current clipboard history
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
      • In Clear clipboard data, select Clear.
      • Or press Windows key + V and select Clear all.
      • Then copy a new image and test again.
    6. If sync is enabled, recheck sync settings
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
      • Turn on clipboard sync.
      • On Windows 11, in Clipboard history across your devices, select Automatically sync text that I copy.
      • Use the same Microsoft account or work account on devices.
    7. If the image is coming from Paint, use a different capture path as a workaround
      • There is a reported Paint bug on Windows 11 where copied image selections can paste incorrectly in other apps.
      • A working workaround is to use Win + Shift + S and capture the rectangle directly with Snipping Tool instead of copying a selection from Paint.
    8. If this started only on one PC a few weeks ago
      • Compare behavior with a simple screenshot copied locally on that PC.
      • If only that PC shows image placeholders while text works, the issue is local to that Windows clipboard/app path rather than an organization-wide setting.

    Expected behavior:

    • Clipboard history keeps up to 25 entries.
    • Older items are removed automatically unless pinned.
    • Pinned items remain after restart.
