Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
For Gmail connection failures in Outlook, the supported fixes depend on whether this is an add-account problem or an existing account that stopped syncing.
- Check whether IMAP is enabled in Gmail.
- In Gmail, go to Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
- Under IMAP Access, select Enable IMAP.
- Save changes.
- If Outlook is trying to add the Gmail account again, complete the Google sign-in and make sure the consent box is selected for:
- Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail Missing that permission can cause Outlook setup to fail.
- If the Gmail account was already in Outlook and now no longer connects, force Outlook to prompt for sign-in again:
- Close Outlook.
- Open Credential Manager from the Windows Start menu.
- Go to Windows Credentials.
- Under Generic credentials, find entries that start with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2.
- Remove the Google IMAP-related entries.
- Reopen Outlook and sign in again when prompted.
- If Outlook still cannot connect, reset the Google consent and then retry:
- Close Outlook.
- Sign in to the Google account in a browser.
- Go to Manage your Google Account > Security.
- Under Your connections to third-party apps & services, open Microsoft apps & services.
- Select See Details > Remove all access > Confirm.
- Then open Outlook again and sign in through the browser prompt.
- Verify Gmail folders are available through IMAP:
- In Gmail, go to Settings > Labels.
- Make sure Show in IMAP is enabled for Inbox, Sent Mail, Trash, and All Mail.
- If the issue started after a Gmail password change, Outlook may not prompt immediately.
- After a password change, it can take about one hour for the OAuth token to expire.
- After that, Outlook should prompt for sign-in again.
- Removing the stored OAuth credentials in Credential Manager can force that prompt sooner.
