Intermittent “We can’t retrieve the calendar events right now” error in Outlook team calendars

We are receiving an increasing number of reports from users who are unable to view colleagues’ calendars in Outlook. The following error is displayed:

“We can’t retrieve the calendar events right now. Wait a few minutes and try again.”

The issue appears to be intermittent and inconsistent across Outlook clients:

  • Some calendars work in Outlook on the web but not in New Outlook or Classic Outlook.
  • Other calendars fail in OWA as well.
  • A calendar may work temporarily and then fail again after restarting Outlook or switching between New and Classic Outlook.
  • Some users first experienced the issue yesterday, while others have experienced it for more than a week.

One affected user is a manager with nine direct reports. Outlook automatically displays these users under “Team: [Manager name]”. However, the number of visible team members changes after restarting Outlook or switching clients. For example, the group may contain all nine members at one point and only three at another.

The Manager attribute and reporting structure have been verified in Active Directory/Entra ID and are correct for all team members.

Our Service Desk has already tested the following without resolving the issue:

  • Outlook on the web, New Outlook and Classic Outlook
  • Removing and adding the affected calendars again
  • Adding calendars manually using the users’ primary SMTP addresses
  • Resetting the Outlook navigation pane
  • Resetting Outlook views
  • Creating a new Outlook profile
  • Verifying the users’ Manager attributes and reporting structure

Because the issue also occurs intermittently in OWA and the membership of the automatically generated Manager’s Team Calendar changes, this does not appear to be limited to the local Outlook profile.

Has anyone else experienced this recently?

Could this be a known Exchange Online issue involving the automatically generated Manager’s Team Calendar, shared-calendar synchronization or mailbox-side calendar navigation data?

Are there any additional diagnostics or supported methods for rebuilding the Manager’s Team Calendar configuration in Exchange Online?

If you have access to admin center, you can see Service Health has issue ref EX1483540, details pasted below. I also don't have this issue today:

Users may intermittently be unable to access their calendars in Outlook on the web and the new Outlook desktop client

    Issue ID: EX1483540

    More info

Impacted users may receive the following error message:

“Can’t retrieve calendar events right now. Refresh the browser and try again.”

As a workaround, impacted users can access their calendar in the classic Outlook desktop client or through Microsoft Teams.

    Scope of impact

Some users attempting to access their calendars through Outlook on the web or the new Outlook desktop client may intermittently be impacted.

    Root cause

The issue is related to the calendar cache state following a refresh, where the event-loading process may continue referencing outdated calendar data after the folder information is updated.

    Current status

We’ve identified that the issue is related to the calendar cache state following a refresh, where the event-loading process may continue referencing outdated calendar data after the folder information is updated. We’ve implemented and merged a fix to ensure the refreshed calendar data is correctly used when loading subsequent events. The fix is expected to reach affected users by October 9, 2026.

    Estimated time to resolve:

    Friday October 9, 2026

    Hi @Magnus Solvang

From my testing, I have been able to reproduce the issue. I am seeing this banner when I tried to open another shared calendar.

    Screenshot 2026-09-24 at 16.20.07

However, in my Outlook has 2 accounts, when I remove the other one and keep the manager account, the error will no longer appear. May I ask if you have more than 1 account set up in your Outlook client?

Additionally, I am not aware of any public documentation about this issue at the moment.
