Azure Machine Learning Studio Notebook Editor crashes when opening any .ipynb file (browser becomes unresponsive)

Hello Microsoft Support Team,

I'm facing an issue with the Azure Machine Learning Studio Notebook Editor.

Whenever I try to open any .ipynb notebook from Authoring → Notebooks, the browser becomes unresponsive and eventually shows "This page isn't responding." The notebook never opens.

What's confusing is that the issue occurs even with a brand-new blank notebook that I create myself. However, the same notebooks open and run successfully in JupyterLab and VS Code, and I can also use the Terminal without any issues.

To rule out environmental problems, I have already tried the following:

  • Created a completely new Azure account and subscription
  • Created new Azure ML workspaces
  • Created multiple new Compute Instances
  • Created brand-new blank notebooks
  • Tested with Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome
  • Tested in Incognito/InPrivate mode
  • Cleared browser cache, cookies, local storage, session storage, and IndexedDB
  • Tested notebooks both inside and outside Git repositories

The behavior remains exactly the same in every case.

Because the issue occurs with newly created blank notebooks across multiple Azure subscriptions and workspaces, it does not appear to be related to notebook content, Git repositories, compute instances, or browser cache.

Could you please help investigate whether this is a known issue with the Azure ML Studio Notebook Editor (AzNB) or advise on any additional diagnostics I can collect?

    Hello Abhishek,

Thank you for your patience, and I'm sorry for the long delay in getting back to you. Your testing was thorough and correct. The problem was not caused by your notebooks, compute instances, Git setup, browser or account.

What happened From 5 July 2026 at 10:25 UTC to 6 July 2026 at 18:01 UTC, a service-side issue in Azure Machine Learning studio stopped the notebook editor from loading .ipynb files. The browser tab would freeze and show "This page isn't responding." JupyterLab, VS Code and the Terminal were not affected, which matches what you saw. Your question was posted during this period. The engineering team deployed a fix on 6 July 2026, and you don't need to change anything on your side.

    What to do now

    1. Open https://ml.azure.com in a new browser tab.
    2. Go to Authoring → Notebooks and open one of your blank notebooks.
    3. Select your compute instance and run a cell.

If the notebook opens and runs, the issue is resolved.

If it still freezes Please reply with the following so we can tell whether this is the same issue or a different cause:

    • Console errors: Press F12 and open the Console tab before you open the notebook. Then send a screenshot of any red errors, especially "URL is outside of allowed domains."
    • Workspace region and the approximate UTC time when you reproduced the freeze.
    • Other file types: Tell us whether .py or .csv files open normally in the Notebooks pane.
    • Network: Tell us whether you connect through a VPN, proxy or corporate network, or use browser extensions or security software that change web pages.

We may also need a network trace (HAR file). Please don't post it here, because it can contain session tokens. We'll send you a private way to share it if needed.

Until this is confirmed, you can keep using JupyterLab or VS Code with your compute instance.

If the retest works, please mark this answer as Accepted so other users with the same issue can find it.

    Thanks,
    Manish.

I think the safe step is to open Studio in a fresh browser profile and take one F12 performance trace while the notebook freezes, and send that trace in an Azure support ticket so the team can look at the client‑side stall.
