Excel Version 2508 Broke Pivot Table Filtering Functionality

Users are getting the following error when trying to filter on a pivot table after update, but was working fine before: "This PivotTable report is invalid. Try Refreshing the data (On the Analyze tab, click Refresh).".

Is there a fix for this broken application?

I have found a somewhat tedious work-around using expand/collapse, but the file is only 7 MB in size and should not be breaking on such a small dataset.

Hi @Travis Mills,

Thank you for reaching out and providing feedback regarding the issue with the PivotTable filtering function in Excel after updating to version 2508. We would like to share with you the detailed information and recommended steps as follows:

After updating to Excel version 2508 (Microsoft 365), users encountered an error when applying filters on PivotTables:

"This PivotTable report is not valid. Try refreshing the data (on the Analyze tab, click Refresh)."

This error did not occur in previous versions and appears even with small-sized files (~7 MB), indicating that it is a bug introduced by the software update.

Microsoft has acknowledged this issue. A fix may have been released in version 2509 or 2510 (September 2025 updates) via the Current Channel.

Temporary Solution: Roll Back to Previous Version

At this time, since Microsoft has not yet released an official patch, we recommend rolling back to a stable version of Excel to ensure PivotTable functionality:

  • Revert to Office version 2507: You can use the Office Deployment Tool or command line to perform this action.
  • Microsoft provides the following command syntax:

officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.XXXX.YYYYY

Where XXXX.YYYYY is the exact build number of version 2507. Reverting to this version will restore PivotTable functionality while waiting for Microsoft’s official fix.

This issue has been acknowledged by the Excel user community and is currently being addressed by Microsoft. While waiting for the official patch, we recommend applying the rollback solution as outlined above.

Whenever I receive new information about this issue, I will provide it to you as soon as possible.

If you encounter any difficulties or have any other questions or concerns, feel free to share them with me. I’ll support you.
