OneDrive and Org Name Change

So I thought this would be easy, but apparently there is a detail I am missing. We recently setup OneDrive with an existing tenant and after a couple of installs we decided we didn't like the name format of the folder displayed in Windows Explorer that OneDrive automatically created.

It was using "Company Name, LLC" for example. Not only was the display name in Windows Explorer showing this, but also the user folder under "C:\users\username\OneDrive - Company Name, LLC"

The goal is to trim the ",LLC" from the end. So after some google'ing I found that you can change the Organization "Name" in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Under "Org settings > Organization profile"

Did that and now on new systems that have never had OneDrive setup, the Windows explorer name and related c:\users folder displays correctly. However, on systems where OneDrive was setup prior to the org name change, it still displays ",LLC".

Nothing I can do seems to change this. I have uninstalled/re-installed OneDrive client. I even went as far as to delete the user profile from one of the Windows systems entirely. Even with a fresh Windows profile and fresh connection of OneDrive, ",LLC" is still displayed.

Can someone shed some light on this please?

Regards,
Adam Tyler

Create a symbolic folder link (NOT A SYMBOLIC FILE LINK). Here is what I did. You don't have to hack any files. Super easy.

Open Windows Powershell NOT AS AN ADMINISTRATOR, or you link may not be visible.

    Enter this command:

    mklink /j "C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\THENAMEOFONEDRIVE" "C:\ROOTFOLDERNAME"

This works for me. I can now store my code in Onedrive and in Visual Studio, I save the files in C:\ODIA (that's the folder I used). This creates a "junction" folder which is just a link from one folder to the other.

    Hope that works for you.

We tried everything but only a Microsoft support ticket worked.

3 days after our tenant name change, new users would pick up the new name in OneDrive but existing users had no such luck. 6 days after our Tenant name change, still nothing. We even had a script to do the following but nothing worked.

We close out of all Office products, unlink OneDrive, close OneDrive, delete out "Business1" (and any other folders) under SOFTWARE-->SyncEnginges-->Proviers-->OneDrive. Then we go to SOFTWARE --> Microsoft --> OneDrive and 0 out the ClientEverSignedIn key and SilentBusinessConfigCompleted key.

Finally, we opened a ticket with Microsoft and within a day of them escalating to "senior engineers on the product team" it starts working. Will they admit they fixed anything? No. But, now any user with a simple unlink and relink gets the new tenant name. So frustrating. Don't waste your time trying to hack it. Just open up a support ticket right away and hope you get a good engineer who can escalate without jumping through too many hoops.

Like May said, she is not the only one who thinks this is wrong.

What folder I use is not for Microsoft to dictate particularly as it gives stupidly long files names.. If I want to store my one drive files in c:\Bloggs, that's for me to determine.

Why oh Why Microsoft do you do this and will you please allow me to control how I set up my machines!

    Grrr, rant over.

Having the same problem here. I wanted to have a short org folder name but it can't be changed on old machines that signed in OneDrive before. Hope Microsoft can help fix that.

@Anonymous - no, that we did not get, but here are some thoughts on how you could manage that - possibly as a user initated app deployment using Intune or your app deployment tool

    1. Script to logout of office - https://quicklaunch.ucworkspace.com/support/solutions/articles/3000097824-signout-microsoft-office-desktop-applications
    2. Options to unlink OneDrive - https://forums.powershell.org/t/onedrive-for-business-unlink-pc-with-powershell/13024/3
    3. Deleting a folder is relatively easy - but you will need to try it out with your scripts and permissions
    4. Restart? That should trigger the sign-in process when the user logs back in

Alternately, you could always try another support case with Microsoft.

Sorry, haven't the capacity to develop or test this myself at present.
