A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
The supported recovery path is:
- Use the Sign-in Helper tool first. It is the primary guided tool for Microsoft account sign-in problems, including cases where the account is not recognized.
- If the account name is not recognized, verify the exact sign-in details:
- Check the email domain carefully.
- Check for spelling differences in the email name.
- If another alias or phone number was ever added to the account, try that instead.
- If the password is correct but sign-in still fails, use Recover your account:
- Enter the email address, phone number, or Skype name used to sign in.
- Choose where to receive the security code.
- Enter the code.
- Set a new password.
- If the account recovery and username recovery tools still report "We couldn't find an account with that username" or that the account does not exist, contact Microsoft Support through Get Help / Contact Support and state that the username has stopped working.
- If the account has not been signed in to for more than two years, it may have been deleted and can no longer be reopened.
- If there was unusual sign-in activity, review the account security guidance. Microsoft may send alerts for sign-ins from a new device or location, and unusual activity can require security verification.
Important supported limits:
- Support agents are not allowed to send password reset links or access and change account details.
- For work, school, or Entra ID accounts, the path is different and requires the IT admin, but the scenario described matches a personal Microsoft account.
