A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Not usually.
If Microsoft Authenticator is opening and working normally, there is no need to delete and reinstall it just because it has been used for several years. The supported guidance is to keep the app and device updated, because versions older than 12 months are not supported.
Reinstalling is mainly useful when there is a problem, such as:
- the app is stuck or will not open
- notifications are not arriving
- a backup restore on a new iPhone did not appear
Before reinstalling, check these items first:
- Open Authenticator > Settings.
- Make sure App updates is turned on.
- Check Notification Settings and confirm Show notifications is turned on.
- Make sure the phone OS is fully updated.
- If sign-in prompts are going to an old phone, remove the old device from your Microsoft account or work/school verification settings.
Important: deleting the app does not automatically remove the old authentication registration. If the account is a work account, the organization may still expect approvals from the previous registration. If access is already broken after a reinstall, the IT help desk or Microsoft 365 administrator may need to require MFA re-registration.
If the app is currently failing, a reinstall can help, but it is safest to make sure the account can still be recovered or re-registered first.
