    Welcome Joe Goryeb,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that Tasks in Classic Outlook on your laptop is so slow that you can't use it.

To narrow down the issue, could you please let me know:

    • Is it slow only when you switch to the Tasks folder, or also when you create, edit or mark a task as complete?
    • Did this start recently, for example after an Office update, or has Tasks always been slow on this laptop?

Please make sure you already tried the Q&A Assist steps. In addition, please try the following:

    1, Reset the Tasks view

    • Open Tasks, then go to View > Change View and select Simple List.
    • Then select View > Reset View and confirm. Custom grouping, sorting or filters can slow down how the list loads.

2, Turn off the task list in the To-Do Bar

    • Go to View > To-Do Bar and clear Tasks, or select Off.
    • Restart Outlook and test Tasks again.

    3, Update Office

    • Go to File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now.
    • Restart Outlook after the update finishes.

    4, Reset all Outlook views

    • Close Outlook, press Windows key + R, type outlook.exe /cleanviews and select OK.
    • Note: This resets any custom views you created back to the default. It doesn't delete any tasks or emails.

    Looking forward to your update.

Start Classic Outlook in Safe Mode to determine whether an add-in is making Tasks unusably slow, then disable the responsible add-in if performance returns to normal.

    1. Test Tasks without add-ins

    1. Close Outlook.
    2. Press Windows key + R.
    3. Enter:
    outlook.exe /safe

    1. Select OK, open Tasks, and perform the same actions that were slow.

    If Tasks now responds normally:

    1. Go to File → Options → Add-ins.
    2. At the bottom, select COM Add-ins → Go.
    3. Record the enabled add-ins, then clear their check boxes. Do not select Remove.
    4. Restart Outlook normally.
    5. Re-enable add-ins one at a time, restarting Outlook after each one, until the slowdown returns. Leave the problematic add-in disabled or update it. ^1^

    2. Check the Tasks folder and background activity

If Safe Mode is equally slow:

    • Look at Outlook’s status bar. If synchronization, AutoArchive, or another operation is running, let it finish before testing again.
    • If the Tasks folder contains a very large number of completed or old tasks, move or archive older items. Outlook can slow down when a single folder or its underlying data file contains many items. ^2^

    3. Repair the Outlook data file

Tasks are stored in Outlook’s .pst or .ost data files, so corruption there can affect Tasks even when mail remains usable. ^1^

    1. In Outlook, open File → Account Settings → Account Settings → Data Files.
    2. Note the file type and location associated with the account.
    3. Close Outlook.
    4. If it is a PST file, back it up before repair.
    5. Locate and run SCANPST.EXE.
    6. Select Browse, choose the PST, and select Start.
    7. If errors are found, select Repair, then reopen Outlook and test Tasks.

The scanner might need to run more than once. For an Exchange account using an OST, Outlook can recreate the offline file; SCANPST does not inspect data held in the Exchange mailbox itself. ^3^

    4. Test a new Outlook profile

If the data file repair does not help:

    1. Close Outlook.
    2. Open Control Panel → User Accounts → Mail → Show Profiles.
    3. Select Add, name the profile, and add the email account.
    4. Select Prompt for a profile to be used.
    5. Start Outlook with the new profile and test Tasks.

If Tasks performs normally there, the original Outlook profile is damaged. Do not delete the old profile until all required local data has been confirmed in the new one. ^4^

    5. Run diagnostics if it remains slow

On Windows 10 or later, run the Classic Outlook Advanced Diagnostics troubleshooter on the affected laptop. It checks the Outlook configuration and produces recommendations or a detailed report. It applies to Classic Outlook, not new Outlook. ^5^

If the whole application—not only Tasks—started freezing after a Windows update, also provide these details when seeking support:

    • Windows version and build
    • Outlook version from File → Office Account → About Outlook
    • Account type: Microsoft 365/Exchange, Outlook.com, IMAP, or POP
    • Whether Safe Mode improved performance
    • Approximate number of items in Tasks
