For BT email in classic Outlook for Windows, the password must first be changed with the email provider, then updated in Outlook.

    1. Open Outlook and select File.
    2. Under Account Information, select the BT account.
    3. Select Account Settings.
    4. Select Server Settings.
    5. Select Incoming mail or Outgoing mail.
    6. Update the password there, then select Next > Done.

If Outlook does not show a password field or keeps using the old password:

    1. Close Outlook completely.
    2. Open Credential Manager in Windows.
    3. Select Windows Credentials.
    4. Under Generic Credentials, remove saved entries related to Outlook, Office, or the BT email account.
    5. Restart the PC.
    6. Open Outlook again and sign in with the new password when prompted.

If that still does not work, create a new Outlook profile:

    1. Close Outlook.
    2. Open Control Panel > Mail.
    3. Select Show Profiles > Add.
    4. Set up the BT account again with the new password.

If the BT account needs manual setup in Outlook, use IMAP with these settings:

    • Incoming mail server: mail.btinternet.com
    • Port: 993
    • Encryption: SSL/TLS
    • Outgoing mail server: mail.btinternet.com
    • Port: 465
    • Encryption: SSL/TLS
    • Username: full BT email address

Third-party disclaimer: BT Email is a third-party email service that is separate from Microsoft. Microsoft Outlook can connect to the mailbox, but BT manages the email account, password, authentication requirements, and mail server settings. Any issue affecting the BT account itself may therefore require assistance from BT Email Support.

    Hi Norman Robson-Smith,

After changing your BT Email password, Outlook should normally ask for the new password the next time it tries to connect.

Please close Outlook completely, reopen it, and enter your new BT Email password if prompted. If no prompt appears, or Outlook continues to show a password or synchronization error, please let us know the exact error message displayed.

You can also confirm that the new password works by signing in directly at BT Email website. If it does not work there either, the password or account issue would need to be resolved with BT first.

Please avoid removing all Outlook or Office credentials at this stage, as that could sign other accounts out unnecessarily. Thank you so much for your understanding.
