On your keyboard, if there is a Scroll Lock key (ScrLk), try pressing that key or Fn + that key to test if that resolves the problem.

    2

If that was not the problem:

    Open Excel.

    Go to File - Options.

    Select Advanced on the left.

In the 'Editing Options' section, enable this setting - 'Enable fill handle and cell drag and drop'

Save that setting and restart Excel.

In Excel, the thick white cross is the normal cell-selection cursor when the pointer is over the worksheet grid. The black cross appears on the fill handle, and the resize cursor appears on column or row borders.

If nothing can be typed, the issue is likely not the white cross itself. Try these checks:

    1. Check whether the sheet or workbook is protected.
      • Go to Review.
      • If Unprotect Sheet or Unprotect Workbook appears, the file is protected and may block editing.
    2. Check whether keyboard navigation is affected by Scroll Lock.
      • Look at the Excel status bar for Scroll Lock.
      • If enabled, turn it off with the ScrLk key, or press Windows + Ctrl + O to open the On-Screen Keyboard and turn off ScrLk there.
    3. Start Excel in Safe Mode to rule out add-ins.
      • Press Windows + R.
      • Type excel /safe and press Enter.
      • If typing works there, disable add-ins in File > Options > Add-ins. Check both Excel Add-ins and COM Add-ins, then restart Excel and re-enable them one at a time.
    4. Make sure drag-and-drop behavior is enabled if the concern is missing cursor modes.
      • Go to File > Options > Advanced.
      • Under Editing options, make sure Enable fill handle and cell drag-and-drop is checked.
    5. Repair Office if the problem continues.
      • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Select Microsoft Office and choose Change.
      • Run Quick Repair first.
      • If needed, run Online Repair.

If the pointer only stays as a white cross over cells, that part is expected behavior in Excel. The main problem to troubleshoot is why editing is blocked.
