The free Edge Copilot was replaced with the limited 365 Copilot. Why?

    Hi Petru D,

I understand your point. The previous free Edge Copilot experience has been folded into a unified Copilot experience, which now uses Microsoft 365-style branding and may apply usage limits to free accounts. This was a product change rather than an issue with your browser or device.

Unfortunately, there is currently no setting to restore the previous Edge Copilot experience. You can read more about the changes here: Copilot app updates for personal, work, and school accounts.

If the limit seems unusually restrictive, could you share the exact message shown and confirm whether you are using a personal account or a work or school account? Please hide any personal information before posting a screenshot.

If your concern is specifically about the previous free experience becoming more limited, you can also send feedback through Copilot > Profile picture > Send feedback.

I hope this helps clarify why the experience changed.

The free Copilot capability in Edge was not simply replaced by paid Microsoft 365 Copilot: Microsoft integrated Copilot Mode into the main Edge experience while separately consolidating and renaming Copilot apps, and the resulting experience can impose limits based on the account and license used.^1^

    What changed

    • In Edge: Copilot remains available from the Copilot icon in the upper-right corner and can use the current webpage for summaries and questions. The standalone “Copilot Mode” presentation was retired, with its browsing features incorporated into Edge.^2^
    • In the Copilot app: Microsoft has consolidated personal and work experiences into one client. The Microsoft 365 Copilot app has also been renamed Microsoft Copilot, which explains why Microsoft 365 branding may appear even when the full paid Microsoft 365 Copilot license is not active.^3^
    • Windows 10 is not identified as the reason for these limits. The relevant distinction is the signed-in account, subscription, and whether the message is a usage-limit notification rather than a missing Edge feature.

If this is a free personal Microsoft account

Microsoft has been moving personal accounts to a unified Copilot experience. Once an account has migrated, there is currently no setting to restore the previous Copilot app or opt out of that migration. Free use remains available, but it can be subject to capacity or daily limits; after reaching one, the choices are to wait for it to reset or use an eligible paid subscription.^4^

If you have Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, or Pro, limits differ by plan, feature, entry point, and service conditions. You can review usage under your Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page.^5^

There is no documented method to bring back the old interface. To object to the change, open Copilot, select your profile picture → Send feedback.^4^

If this is a work or school account

Copilot Chat Basic remains included with eligible Microsoft 365 licenses and is available in Edge, but it is not the same as the premium Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on. Basic primarily uses web data; the premium license adds priority access and deeper organizational-data integration.^2^

For users without the Copilot add-on, Microsoft applies fair-use limits to some Copilot Chat features. Limits can vary, are not published numerically, and cannot be adjusted by an administrator. A displayed limit notification is expected behavior rather than an Edge failure.^6^

If the Copilot icon itself has disappeared

That is a different problem from receiving a usage-limit message:

    1. In Edge, check that the sidebar is enabled and Copilot is enabled in its sidebar settings.
    2. Open edge://settings/help, install available updates, and restart Edge.
    3. Select the Edge profile icon → Add profile → Add, then check whether Copilot appears in the new profile.
    4. On a managed work device, open edge://policy. If Copilot or the sidebar is blocked, export the policy list and give it to your IT administrator; policy changes require administrative control.

Microsoft lists sidebar settings, organizational policies, outdated Edge versions, region/account availability, and profile problems as possible causes of a missing icon.^7^

The decisive detail is what you currently see: a missing Edge icon, a Microsoft 365-branded screen, or an explicit usage-limit message, and whether Edge is signed in with a personal or work/school account.
