Try these steps in order:
- Check the hardware first.
- Unplug the keyboard and mouse, wait a short time, then plug them back in.
- Try a different USB port on the laptop.
- If a USB hub is being used, remove it and connect the devices directly to the laptop.
- Check for damaged cables, low batteries, or dirt blocking keys or sensors.
- If the devices are wireless, reset the wireless connection.
- Look on the bottom of the keyboard or mouse for a Reset button.
- If there is a USB wireless receiver, unplug it for about 10 seconds and plug it back in.
- If the devices use Bluetooth, check whether Bluetooth is available and working on the laptop.
- Test whether the keyboard and mouse work on another PC.
- If they do not work on another PC either, the devices may need to be replaced.
- Some devices require the correct driver to be installed when testing on another PC.
- Update the device drivers through Windows Update.
- In the taskbar search box, type check for updates.
- Select Check for updates.
- Under Windows Update, select Check for updates and install any available updates.
- Update the device driver in Device Manager.
- In the taskbar search box, type device manager.
- Open Device Manager.
- Find the affected device, double-click it, open the Driver tab, select Update Driver, and follow the prompts.
- If the issue is Bluetooth-related, power the laptop fully off and back on.
- Hold Shift while selecting Start > Power > Shut down.
- Wait 1 minute, then turn the laptop back on.
- This fully powers off the Bluetooth hardware. Do not use Restart for this step.
- If Bluetooth devices still are not recognized, update the Bluetooth adapter driver.
- Right-click Start > Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the Bluetooth adapter and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart the laptop if prompted.
If the keyboard and mouse are still not recognized after these steps, the issue is likely with the laptop USB port, Bluetooth hardware, or the device itself.
