Xbox Wireless Controller: XboxComposite remains present but HID/XInput child device disappears after disconnect — reboot required

I'm experiencing a long-standing issue with official Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controllers connected through the official Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.

I previously reported this issue through Windows Feedback Hub, but it remains unresolved across multiple Windows 11 builds.

Problem description

After an occasional wireless disconnection, the affected Xbox controller reconnects (solid Xbox button) but stops providing any input.

The controller disappears from joy.cpl, and the issue persists until Windows is fully rebooted.

Importantly, the wireless adapter itself remains functional, and a second Xbox controller can connect to the same adapter and work normally.

Technical observations

During the failure:

The affected XboxComposite parent device remains present in Windows Plug and Play.

DEVPKEY_Device_ProblemCode = 0

DEVPKEY_Device_HasProblem = False

dc1-controller.sys remains loaded, with xboxgip.sys in the driver stack.

However, the HID/XInput child device is no longer enumerated.

The controller is no longer available through joy.cpl.

This suggests that the controller's parent device remains operational from the PnP perspective, while the input interface is not recreated following the disconnection.

Troubleshooting already performed

I have confirmed the following:

The issue occurs with the Xbox Wireless Adapter connected directly to the PC, without USB-over-IP or VirtualHere.

A second controller continues working through the same adapter.

Connecting the affected controller via USB to the same PC does not restore functionality.

Connecting that exact controller via USB to another PC works immediately.

Restarting, removing, and re-enumerating the controller's PnP device does not restore input.

Restarting the Xbox Wireless Adapter does not help.

Restarting XboxGipSvc does not help.

Scanning for hardware changes does not recreate the missing input device.

Only a full Windows reboot restores the controller.

System information

Originally reproduced on:

Windows 11 25H2 — build 26200.9168

Still reproducible on:

Windows 11 26H2 — build 26300.9711

Driver versions documented during the investigation:

xboxgip.sys: 10.0.26100.8972

dc1-controller.sys: 1.0.0.1

Example affected parent device:

USB\VID_045E&PID_0B12\...

Another user has reported what appears to be the same failure, including the disappearance of the HID/XInput child devices:

Question

How can we diagnose why Windows fails to recreate the HID/XInput child device after a temporary disconnect, and is there a supported way to recover it without rebooting the entire operating system?

In particular, I would appreciate guidance on which PnP, Xbox GIP, or HID-related ETW providers should be traced to capture the failure.

I can provide before-and-after PnP device-tree snapshots, driver information, and relevant event logs.

Given that the adapter remains functional and the affected controller works immediately on another PC, this appears consistent with a Windows device-enumeration or input-stack issue rather than a physical controller failure, although the exact root cause has not been established.
