A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper to recover the Microsoft account associated with Word; an active subscription through December 2026 does not by itself restore access to a locked or inaccessible account.^1^
Recover your personal Microsoft account
- Open the Microsoft account Sign-in Helper.
- Enter the email address or mobile number used to sign in to Word.
- Follow the diagnosis and recovery instructions displayed.
- If prompted to verify your identity:
- Choose where to receive the security code.
- Enter the code.
- Create and confirm a new password.^2^
- After access is restored, open Word:
- Windows: File > Account > Sign In
- Mac: Open Word and select Sign In
Check the spelling and full domain of the address—for example, @outlook.com versus @outlook.co.uk. If Microsoft does not recognize it, try another email alias or phone number attached to the account.^2^
If the screen specifically says the account is locked
Sign in at Microsoft account and complete the displayed unlock verification.^3^
If there is no “Let’s prove you’re human” option:
- Select the link beginning with aka.ms/ shown in the lockout window.
- Submit the account-reinstatement form.
- Wait for Microsoft Online Safety to contact you by email.
- Do not submit duplicate requests, because that can delay review.^3^
If this is a work or school account
The personal-account recovery process does not apply. Contact the organization’s IT administrator or use Microsoft’s work or school password reset.^1^
Do not create a new Microsoft account or purchase another subscription—the existing subscription remains associated with the original account.
