First test whether Word, Excel, and PowerPoint open from the Start menu, because that determines whether Office itself is failing or Windows has lost the file associations.
If the apps open from Start
The Office installation is running, so restore the associations that tell Windows which app opens each file type:
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Default apps.
- In the search box for a file type, enter each extension below and assign the indicated application:
-
.docand.docx→ Microsoft Word -
.xlsand.xlsx→ Microsoft Excel -
.pptand.pptx→ Microsoft PowerPoint
-
- Close Settings and double-click one file of each type to test it.
Windows uses these associations to choose the application launched when a file is double-clicked.^1^
As an immediate workaround, open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint first, then select File → Open → Browse and choose the document.^2^
If the apps do not open from Start
Test one application in Office Safe Mode:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter one command and select OK:
winword /safe
excel /safe
powerpnt /safe
Safe Mode starts Office without most add-ins and startup customizations.^3^
- If the app opens in Safe Mode: select File → Options → Add-ins. At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins → Go. Disable add-ins, restart normally, and re-enable them one at a time to identify the problematic one.^4^
- If it still does not open: repair the complete Office installation.
Repair Office on Windows 11
- Right-click Start → Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three dots → Modify.
- For a Click-to-Run installation, select Online Repair → Repair.
If only Repair is offered, select it and continue. - Complete the repair, restart the laptop if prompted, and test Word, Excel, and PowerPoint again.
Online Repair is the more comprehensive option; repairing the suite covers all included Office applications.^5^
If Office is not listed under Installed apps, or Online Repair finishes but none of the three applications launches—including in Safe Mode—the installation likely needs an uninstall and clean reinstall. Before doing that, check whether multiple Office versions appear under Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features; Microsoft recommends removing versions that are no longer needed because multiple installations can interfere with file opening.^2^
