A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Common causes and fixes for Word not converting to PDF on Windows:
- Try the standard export path in Word:
- Select File > Export.
- Select Create PDF/XPS.
- Make sure PDF (*.pdf) is selected.
- Choose the file name and location.
- Select Publish.
- If that does not work, use Save As:
- Press F12 to open Save As.
- Save the document as PDF.
- If the file saves as .docx instead of .pdf when saving to OneDrive or another online location, use this workaround:
- Change the file extension to .pdf, or
- Save to a local location first, then switch back to OneDrive and save again.
- If the document is an older .doc file, convert it to .docx first. Older Office formats can have limitations with modern protection features, and converting to .docx can allow PDF export to work.
- If Word is missing Export or PDF options unexpectedly, check whether the issue happens with all documents and confirm Word is signed in with an account that includes desktop app use.
- If Word still only offers PDF/XPS or behaves incorrectly when saving, run an Office Repair. The Online Repair option is the more thorough repair method.
