Managing sound and video settings during Teams meetings and calls for optimal communication
Try this in order:
- In the Teams meeting window, make sure Mic is not muted. If the mic icon has a line through it, select Unmute mic.
- Check the headset itself for a physical mute switch or mute button. Some headset booms mute when flipped up.
- In Teams, verify the correct microphone is selected:
- Before a meeting: Settings and more > Settings > Devices
- Under Audio settings, choose the headset mic in the Microphone dropdown
- Select Make a test call to record and play back a short sample
- Note: test call is unavailable on Teams for web
- During a meeting:
- Select the dropdown arrow next to Mic
- Select More audio settings
- Confirm the correct microphone is selected
- In Windows, confirm the headset mic is enabled:
- Start > Settings > System > Sound
- Under Input, select the headset microphone in Choose a device for speaking or recording
- Make sure the mic volume is not muted
- If needed, go to Advanced > More sound settings > Recording, right-click the mic, and select Enable
- Check microphone privacy permissions:
- Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone
- Turn on Microphone access
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone
- Turn on Microsoft Teams (work or school)
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone
- If these were already on, turn them off and back on, then restart the device
- If Windows is not detecting the headset microphone at all, reinstall the audio driver. Warning: uninstalling drivers can temporarily remove audio devices until restart.
- Right-click Start > Device Manager
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers
- Right-click the audio device and select Uninstall device
- Restart the PC
- Return to Device Manager and Update driver if needed
- If the mic still does not work in Teams, unplug and reconnect the headset. If it is Bluetooth, make sure it is charged and not connected to another device.
If the headset audio works but the microphone still does not appear in Teams, the most likely causes are the wrong input device selected in Teams, Windows microphone permissions, or the microphone being disabled in Windows.
