Microsoft Teams Business – MFA Error 399287 – Unable to Sign In

Dear Microsoft Support Team,

I am the owner and administrator of a small business Microsoft Teams subscription, which I purchased and configured myself.

Until recently, I was able to access Microsoft Teams without any problems. However, I can no longer sign in.

When Microsoft asks me to verify my identity via SMS, I immediately receive Error Code 399287. No verification code is sent, and there is no option to use another authentication method.

I understand that this error may be related to Microsoft's phone reputation protection system.

As I am the only administrator of this business account, I cannot reset the MFA settings myself.

Could a Microsoft support representative please assist me with:

Investigating and removing any incorrect SMS verification block.

Restoring access to my business account.

Enabling an alternative MFA method, such as Microsoft Authenticator.

I can provide my account information and technical details privately through a secure Microsoft support channel.

Thank you for your assistance.

Kind regards

@Jos Douven I understand that you are currently unable to access your Microsoft Teams business account because SMS verification is failing with Error Code 399287, and that you are the only administrator of the account.

Since you cannot access the account to reset your authentication methods yourself, this will need to be handled through Microsoft’s account recovery/support process.

Please do not send passwords, verification codes, or other sensitive authentication information by email.

We recommend contacting Microsoft Support through the official support channel and explaining that you are the sole administrator locked out because MFA verification is failing. Microsoft may need to verify your ownership of the business account before helping you regain access or re-register an authentication method such as Microsoft Authenticator.

if this answers help you please marked as solved .

    Thank you for your response.

Unfortunately, this does not resolve my issue.

I have already tried contacting Microsoft Business Support, but I cannot access the support portal because my business account is blocked by MFA Error 399287.

My only other Microsoft account is a personal Microsoft 365 Family account, which cannot be used to access business support.

I am the sole administrator of my Microsoft Teams business account, so I have no other administrator who can reset my MFA settings.

I have seen several similar cases on Microsoft Q&A where Microsoft moderators contacted the engineering team and successfully removed the BadReputation block.

Could a Microsoft moderator please assist me in the same way, preferably through a private message?

I can securely provide the necessary account and tenant details.

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Dear Jos,

I'm sorry to hear that you are locked out of the administrator account. I understand how urgent this can be when the account is needed to manage your organization's Microsoft 365 services. As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly reset the MFA method on your account for you. Unfortunately, my role here is limited to providing general guidance and steps you can apply from your side. I am not able to reset MFA, recover admin access, contact Data protection team on your behalf or make changes to your Microsoft 365 tenant.

I understand you've seen other threads where this was resolved. However, I'm not able to contact the engineering team or remove the block through a private message. Only Data protection team can restore your access, after they verify that you own the tenant. Your personal Microsoft 365 Family account can't be used for this, so here are the two ways to reach them.

For business accounts, the best way to reach Data protection team is by phone. You can refer to this article to see the customer support phone number for your region.

Here are some tips and a sample response to help you navigate the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system more effectively:

In some countries the call is handled by an automated system, which tends to cut people off if the answers do not match what it expects. Here is a flow that generally works better:

IVR: What kind of problem do you have?

    You: Authenticator

IVR: What kind of product do you use?

    You: Office 365 for business.

IVR confirmation: education or business account?

    You: For Business

    IVR: Are you an administrator?

    You: Yes.

IVR: Is there another administrator in your organization?

    You: No.

IVR: Do you need a... service request?

You: Yes, please connect me with the Data Protection team.

Kindly note that you may need to repeat this process a few times, availability can vary based on local business hours, and the term "Global Admin" should be clearly mentioned during the call.

Alternatively, if reaching support by phone is not possible, you can also create a free trial tenant and submit your request from there. To set up a new tenant, follow these steps:

Visit the Office 365 Enterprise plan and pricing comparison page, choose Basic plan, and click "Try for free" to start a free trial.

Follow the guided setup process to create your new trial account.

Once the new tenant is created, you should be able to access your support portal and submit your ticket.

Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center

Go to Show All > Support > New Service Request.

In the request, explain your situation in detail.

The support team will guide you through the identity verification process to help you regain access to your account.

    Important Notes:

This new test tenant doesn't give you access to your original locked tenant's data or settings. It only serves as a temporary means of contacting Microsoft support.

Be prepared for Microsoft to want to verify your identity and admin privileges from the previous tenant.

The processing time may be longer due to contacting support from another tenant.

Remember to cancel the trial subscription as soon as your original account is restored to avoid unwanted charges.

I truly hope you get this resolved swiftly. Please know that even though I cannot directly intervene, pointing you toward the correct, specialized support is genuinely the most effective help I can offer from my position. Please let me know if you need anything else. Wishing you all the best.

@Jos Douven can you try this solution if solve your issue please mark as solved

Create a temporary Microsoft 365 tenant using a trial license: Go to Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing and click Try for free to set up a temporary Microsoft 365 tenant with a trial license.

-Use this new account to sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and submit a support request on behalf of your primary (locked) account.

-Click Help & Support > then choose Create a support request. Note: This method doesn't require you to use your new account for your business. Instead, it allows you to create a temporary global administrator account so you can submit a support request, as your original global administrator account is locked out due to issues with multi-factor authentication. The trial account is free for one month. Be sure to delete it after submitting your support request to avoid any automatic renewals or charges from Microsoft.
