Use Event Viewer to separate the cause by correlating Application log errors with the User Profile Service Operational log, and enable the Diagnostic log only if more detail is needed.
- Open Event Viewer:
- Control Panel → System and Security → Administrative Tools → View event logs.
- Go to Windows Logs → Application.
- Select Filter Current Log and filter on User Profiles Service.
- Review Error and Warning events, especially around the time event 1508 occurred.
- Check the event details to identify the likely cause:
- Registry hive corruption / registry load failure: event 1508 text such as “Windows was unable to load the registry” for
ntuser.datindicates the profile registry hive could not be loaded. - File locking: if the detail says “The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process”, that points to a locked file or locked registry hive.
- Insufficient system resources / disk-related access failure: if the detail says “Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service”, that indicates a resource problem that can prevent the profile from loading.
- Copy or access failures during roaming profile load: event 1509 with text such as “Windows cannot copy file … This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights” helps distinguish file access or permissions issues from pure hive corruption.
- Registry hive corruption / registry load failure: event 1508 text such as “Windows was unable to load the registry” for
- Correlate with the Operational log:
- Go to Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → User Profile Service → Operational.
- Examine events that occurred at the same time as the Application log errors.
- This log shows where in the profile load or unload process the failure occurred, which helps determine whether the problem happened while opening the registry hive, copying profile files, or unloading the profile.
- If the Operational log is not detailed enough, enable the Diagnostic log temporarily:
- In Event Viewer, select View → Show Analytic and Debug Logs.
- Go to Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → User Profile Service → Diagnostic.
- Select Enable Log.
- Reproduce the sign-in problem, then review the Diagnostic log.
- Disable it after troubleshooting because this logging is much more detailed and should only be used while diagnosing the issue.
- Interpret common patterns:
- Hive corruption or hive load problem: repeated 1508 entries referencing
ntuser.dator “unable to load the registry.” - File locking or possible antivirus interference: repeated “file is being used by another process” messages. That pattern indicates another process is holding the profile file or hive open; antivirus is one possible source of that lock.
- Insufficient disk access / security rights: events mentioning insufficient security rights or inability to copy files to the local profile path.
- Ignore event 1530 during this analysis; it can be safely ignored.
- Hive corruption or hive load problem: repeated 1508 entries referencing
This approach does not prove antivirus by product name, but it does let the logs distinguish between registry hive load failure, file locking, and access/resource problems based on the event text and the stage shown in the Operational or Diagnostic logs.
