Is the "Official community" attribute in Viva Engage available through Microsoft Graph?

In Viva Engage, a network admin can mark a community as an official community. It's under the community's "..." menu, in the Network admin section, as "Mark/Unmark official community."

I'm trying to retrieve this attribute programmatically through Microsoft Graph, and I can't find it.

What I've checked:

  • The community resource type in v1.0 and beta documents only id, displayName, description, groupId and privacy, plus the group and owners relationships. None of these indicates official status.
  • The resource is described as an open type, but I haven't found any documented extra property for this.

Questions:

  1. Does Microsoft Graph (v1.0 or beta) expose whether a community is marked as official? If so, which endpoint and property?
  2. If not, is there a supported alternative, such as the Yammer REST API or a property on the underlying Microsoft 365 group?
  3. If it isn't available yet, is it on the roadmap? Is there a feedback item I can upvote?

Scenario: I need to list or filter official communities in my app (for example, to highlight them or limit results to them)

Dear Jiang, Jack,

Thank you for your detailed investigation and for outlining the scenario clearly.

1/ Does Microsoft Graph (v1.0 or beta) expose whether a community is marked as an Official Community?

Based on the current Microsoft Graph documentation, no, the Official Community status is not exposed through the Viva Engage community resource in either v1.0 or beta.

The documented properties currently include: id, displayName, description, groupId, privacy

Along with the group and owners relationships. There is no documented property such as isOfficial, officialCommunity, or similar that identifies whether a community has been marked as an Official Community.

2/ If not, is there a supported alternative, such as the Yammer REST API or a property on the underlying Microsoft 365 group?

While legacy Yammer APIs expose additional community metadata, I was unable to locate any Microsoft documentation that confirms the Official Community status is available through a supported API endpoint. Likewise, the associated Microsoft 365 Group does not appear to expose this Viva Engage-specific setting.

As a workaround, some organizations maintain a separate list of official communities (for example, storing the community ID or group ID in a SharePoint list or application database) and use that as the source of truth.

For reference Use the Microsoft Graph API to work with Viva Engage

3/ If it isn't available yet, is it on the roadmap? Is there a feedback item I can upvote?

I could not find a published roadmap item or Microsoft announcement indicating that support for the Official Community attribute is planned for Microsoft Graph or Viva Engage APIs.

If this capability is important for your application, I recommend submitting or upvoting feedback through the Microsoft Feedback Portal so the product team can evaluate adding this attribute in a future release.

I hope this helps clarify the current limitations and meet your expectations, feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.
