Word: Blue Icon does not show on Word documents

Good Day

I just purchased and installed Microsoft 365 on my desktop.

The icons for Excel and Powerpoint show correctly in File Explorer. However, on all my Word Documents/file, the icon is a blank white icon, not blue.

How to correct. I did an online repair for 365, but it did not change the icon to the "Blue" word icon

Please advise

Thank you

Right click a Word file and select 'Open With' and select Notepad from the resulting list, and ensure you choose the option to always use Notepad to open Word Documents.

That file will just look corrupt in Notepad, close it.

Then right click the Word file again and select 'Open With' and select Word from the resulting list, and ensure you choose the option to always use Word to open Word Documents.

Does that process reset the Word icons on the files.

Check whether double-clicking a white-icon .docx file opens it in Word; change the file association only if it opens another application or Windows reports that no application is associated.

If the document does not open in Word

Since Online Repair has already made no difference, manually restore the Word association:

    1. Open Start, type Control Panel, and open it.
    2. Select Programs → Default Programs.
    3. Open Set a default for a file type or link type.
    4. Search for .docx.
    5. Select its current default application, choose Microsoft Word, and confirm.
    6. Repeat for other affected Word formats, such as .doc or .rtf.
    7. Return to File Explorer and verify that:
      • The document has the Word icon.
      • Double-clicking it opens the installed Microsoft 365 version of Word.

Microsoft documents manual reassociation as the next action when an Office repair does not correct a file-association problem.^1^

If the document already opens correctly in Word

That indicates the basic file association is working, so reassociation is not established as a fix for this icon-only symptom. Check these conditional cases instead:

    • Multiple Office versions installed: Go to Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features. If an older, unwanted Office version is genuinely installed alongside Microsoft 365, uninstall only that older version and restart Windows. Multiple Office installations can cause files to open through the wrong Office version.^1^
    • Microsoft Store installation: Microsoft published a reset workaround for blank Office icons, but it specifically applies to Office 2016 Version 1802, Microsoft Store build 9029.2167, in China and Japan. It should not be treated as the fix for a current Microsoft 365 installation unless Settings → Apps identifies that exact Store-based version and the regional condition applies. For that affected build, select Microsoft Office Desktop Apps → Advanced options → Fix, restart, and use Reset only if Fix fails.^2^

If Word is already the default, there is no duplicate Office installation, and the documented Store condition does not apply, the available Microsoft guidance does not identify a supported icon-only repair beyond the repair already completed. The appropriate next step is Microsoft 365 support, providing the Windows version, Word version/build from Word → File → Account, installation type, and confirmation that .docx files still open correctly.
