My notes disappeared only 1 hour after taking them, can i recover them??

The notes i was taking in class disappeared when i reopened OneNote 1 hour later – not only that, multiple of my notes from previous classes in that same notebook ALSO disappeared, so now i'm left with notes from only 2 out of 6 topics from that class. I use the online version of OneNote, and i can't find the notes anywhere in trash or backup or previous page versions.

The 11:32 time stamp is when i made the page, then i took notes for 1.5h and for some reason none of them are on the page.

Is there any way to recover my notes? Also why did that happen??

Search across all notebooks for a distinctive phrase from the missing notes before attempting a whole-OneDrive restore, because content moved to another page or notebook will not appear in the page’s recycle bin or version history.

    1. Search every notebook and account

    1. In OneNote, search for an unusual word or phrase you remember typing.
    2. Set the search scope to All notebooks. If necessary, open the notebook in the Windows desktop OneNote app and press Ctrl+E.
    3. Open every matching result. If the content is on another page, use Move or Copy to return it to the correct section.
    4. Check that OneNote is signed in with the same school account used during class. If multiple school or personal accounts are listed, inspect their notebooks separately. Microsoft specifically recommends all-notebooks search, reopening closed notebooks, and checking the notebook’s OneDrive location when notes cannot be found.^1^
    5. In that school account’s OneDrive, browse Documents, Notebooks, and any shared folders. Open similarly named notebooks directly from OneDrive; this can detect a duplicate or differently located copy.

Since you already checked deleted notes, backups, and previous page versions, there is no need to repeat those checks.

    2. If the notebook is stored in OneDrive, consider restoring OneDrive

This is a broad rollback, not a page-only recovery. Use it only after the searches above and only if Settings → Restore OneDrive is available.

    1. First copy or download any important files created or changed after the notes disappeared.
    2. Open the OneDrive website using the affected school account.
    3. Select Settings → Restore OneDrive.
    4. Choose Custom date and time and select a point immediately before the notes disappeared.
    5. Review the activity feed carefully, then select Restore.

OneDrive Restore requires Microsoft 365 and can undo file operations from the previous 30 days. Files created after the selected restore point are moved to the OneDrive Recycle Bin, so unrelated files may also be affected.^2^

A rollback can help if notebook data was deleted or overwritten after reaching OneDrive. It cannot recover text that never reached the service.

    3. If this is a Class Notebook

Determine where it is hosted by copying the notebook link:

    • A link containing /personal/ indicates OneDrive.
    • A link containing /sites/ or /teams/ indicates SharePoint or Teams.

For a OneDrive-hosted Class Notebook, also check the OneDrive second-stage recycle bin. For a Teams/SharePoint-hosted notebook, ask the school’s Microsoft 365 administrator to check the corresponding SharePoint site and its recovery options. Retention periods depend on the school’s configuration, so contact IT promptly.^3^

    Ask the administrator to check:

    • Microsoft 365 Service health for OneNote, OneDrive, or SharePoint incidents.
    • Audit/activity records around the time the pages became blank.
    • SharePoint or OneDrive retention and administrator recovery options.

    Why this may have happened

The screenshot confirms that the page shell—with its title, date, and creation time—exists, but it does not establish that the 1.5 hours of page content successfully synchronized. Possible categories include an unsaved synchronization failure, later overwrite, deletion, or opening a different copy/account. The available evidence does not identify which occurred.

Microsoft warns that when recent content is absent from OneNote for the web, it may not have synchronized to the server. It also advises against signing out, reinstalling, or closing an incompletely synchronized notebook before copying any locally visible notes, because that can cause data loss.^4^

If any phone, tablet, or desktop computer previously opened this notebook, disconnect that device from the internet before opening OneNote, then inspect it for an older cached copy. If the missing text appears, copy it immediately into a separate document before reconnecting. Browser-only editing generally does not provide a user-accessible desktop backup unless another OneNote client also opened or cached the notebook.

    Dear @Kai B

I understand how upsetting it is to lose class notes, especially when earlier topics are missing too. The 11:32 timestamp shows the page’s creation time; it does not confirm that the later notes were saved successfully.

Since you have already checked deleted notes and page versions, I recommend these next steps:

    1. Preserve any remaining copy. If the notes are visible in another open tab or device, copy them into a separate document immediately. Avoid clearing browser data while investigating.
    2. Check the notebook directly from OneDrive or your school’s SharePoint, using the same account. Search for a distinctive phrase from the missing notes and check for duplicate notebooks or misplaced sections. Microsoft recommends checking account and notebook locations when notes disappear. Please refer to this document: Find OneNote notes, pages or tabs
    3. Test the same notebook in a separate browser window. If the content appears there, copy it before making further changes.
    4. If it remains missing, contact your school’s IT help desk for a school account. Provide the notebook location, affected page titles, browser, and approximate editing times.

A connection or synchronization problem is one possibility, but the screenshot alone cannot establish the cause. OneNote for the web saves automatically, but it does not create the automatic local backups available in desktop OneNote. If the missing text never reached cloud storage and no other copy exists, recovery may not be possible. Please refer to this document: Sync a notebook in OneNote

Were you using a school or personal account, and did you notice an “Offline,” “Saving,” or connection warning during class?
