The installed Windows 11 Pro edition cannot use the device’s Windows 11 Home Single Language digital license; either enter a genuine Windows 11 Pro key or clean-install Windows 11 Home Single Language.
Option 1: Keep Windows 11 Pro
Use this option only if you purchased a genuine Pro license.
- Open Settings → System → Activation.
- Select Change product key.
- Enter the genuine 25-character Windows 11 Pro key.
- Complete activation while connected to the internet.
The activation key must match the installed Windows edition.^1^
If you do not own a Pro license, you can purchase the edition upgrade from Microsoft Store:
- Right-click Start and select Run.
- Enter:
ms-windows-store://windowsupgrade/ - Select OK and complete the purchase.^2^
A generic Pro setup key does not provide a Pro license or activate Windows.
Option 2: Reinstall the licensed Home Single Language edition
Microsoft’s documented resolution when a device has a Home digital license but Pro is installed is to install the Home edition. Windows should then activate automatically from the device’s digital license.^3^
This clean installation removes files, applications, and settings. Back up all important data first.
- On a working PC, open the Windows 11 download page: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11
- Under Create Windows 11 Installation Media, select Download Now.
- Run
MediaCreationTool.exeand create a bootable USB drive.^4^ - Connect the USB drive to the affected PC and boot from it. Consult the PC manufacturer’s instructions if the USB boot option does not appear.
- In Windows Setup, select Install Windows 11.
- If asked for a key, select I don’t have a product key.
- If an edition list appears, select Windows 11 Home Single Language—not Pro.
- The edition-selection page might not appear if Setup automatically detects the Home Single Language key stored in the device firmware.
- Complete the installation, connect to the internet, and check Settings → System → Activation.
Microsoft documents that installation media can automatically apply a firmware-stored key and that the reinstalled edition must match the license.^5^
If Windows Setup does not offer or automatically install Home Single Language, obtain the factory recovery image from the PC manufacturer; manufacturer recovery media usually includes the original licensed edition and device-specific drivers.
