Are you using the Office apps on a Windows PC or on an Apple Mac computer?

    1

If you are using the Office apps on a Windows device:

    Open Word.

At the top right of Word, log out of Office.

Restart (not shut down) your PC, then log back into Office, is your licence/subscription then recognized correctly.

If not, log into your Microsoft account on this link, is your Office licence listed correctly there, or if that is a subscription, check the expiry date listed on your subscription, is that listed correctly.

If you are using the Office apps on an Apple Mac computer:

What version of Microsoft Office do you have, is that a subscription to Microsoft 365 or a standalone version of Office like Office 2019, 2021 or 2024.

At the top left of your Mac desktop, click the Apple icon and select 'About this Mac', what version of MacOS is installed on your computer?

Sign Word and its OneDrive connected service into the same Microsoft account that owns the renewed subscription, because an account mismatch can leave editing disabled and block uploads.

    1. Align the subscription, Word, and OneDrive accounts

    1. Close all Microsoft 365 applications.
    2. Open Services & subscriptions and sign in with the Microsoft account used to renew Microsoft 365: https://account.microsoft.com/services
    3. Confirm that Microsoft 365 appears under Subscriptions and is active.
    4. Open Word and select File → Account.
    5. Under User Information, check the signed-in address:
      • If it is not the subscription-owning account, select Switch Account and sign in with the correct one.
      • If Word displays Unlicensed Product, the editing restriction is an activation issue; activation failures disable most Office features.^1^
    6. Reconnect OneDrive in Word:
      • Windows: File → Account → Add a service → Storage → OneDrive
      • Mac: Home → Connected Services → OneDrive
      • Sign in with the account that owns or has permission to edit the destination files.^2^
    7. Restart Word, create a small test document, edit it, and save it to OneDrive.

    2. If Word still says “Unable to edit”

If the title bar shows Unlicensed Product, Word is in reduced-functionality mode and cannot edit or create documents.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "A subscription notice appears when I open a Microsoft 365 application | Microsoft Support")

    On Windows 10 or later:

    1. Open Microsoft’s activation article below.
    2. Under Microsoft 365: Use the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter, start the troubleshooter.
    3. Allow it to open Get Help, then complete the prompts on the same PC where Word is installed.^1^

If activation still fails, check for conflicting installations:

    1. Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
    2. Search for Office.
    3. If multiple Office versions are installed, uninstall only the version you no longer use.
    4. Restart the computer and open Word again.^1^

    3. If editing works but “Upload blocked” remains

That message can occur when Word is signed into an account without permission to upload to the selected OneDrive location.^4^

    Check the matching condition:

    • Personal OneDrive: Verify the file can be uploaded directly through OneDrive on the web. If storage is full, OneDrive cannot upload, edit, or sync new files.^4^
    • Work or school OneDrive/SharePoint: In Word → File → Account, ensure the work or school account is selected. The destination library also requires edit permission; ask the organization’s administrator if the folder is read-only.^5^
    • Only one shared folder fails: Save to your own OneDrive folder. If that works, the problem is permission to the original shared folder rather than Word activation.

Until desktop activation is restored, documents can still be opened and edited with the free browser version at Office.com, subject to the file’s permissions and available OneDrive storage.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "A subscription notice appears when I open a Microsoft 365 application | Microsoft Support")
