Class Notebook Failures Since Switching to the New LTI

The school district I work at uses Microsoft 365 for Education and Schoology. Sometime in September, the classic integration system between Schoology and Teams was ended forcing everyone into the new Microsoft 365 LTI. Since this change nothing works.

  • If I create a Teams assignment in Schoology, the assignment does not sync to Teams.
  • If I attempt to create a Teams assignment in Schoology with a Class Notebook page attached, it tells me there isn't a Class Notebook set up for my class. There is. It shows up and works correctly directly in the Teams app.
  • If I open the Class Notebook app to try and edit permissions in my Collaboration Space, the app tells me that I don't have any Class Notebooks. I do. I have for each of my five classes that open and function properly in Teams and the OneNote app.

I submitted a ticket to my IT department 49 days ago and despite them working with someone from Microsoft this problem still persists. I need these issues fixed yesterday.

    Manage the existing Teams-created Class Notebooks directly in Teams, while the district’s Schoology and Microsoft 365 administrators validate the new LTI activation, identity mapping, and course-to-Team configuration.

    Immediate path for Collaboration Space settings

    Because these notebooks exist and work in Teams, do not recreate them merely because the standalone Class Notebook app cannot discover them.

    For each class:

    1. Open the class in Microsoft Teams.
    2. Select Class Notebook.
    3. Select Manage Notebooks.
    4. Manage notebook sections or lock/unlock the Collaboration Space there.

    Microsoft specifically directs Teams-created notebooks to be managed in Teams; they appear under Co-owned notebooks. Separate student-group permissions use a dedicated Collaboration Space permissions workflow rather than the general lock/unlock setting.^1^

    This addresses notebook administration, but the Schoology failures require administrator action.

    Checks for the Schoology and Microsoft 365 administrators

    Send the following checklist to the existing support case and request the result of each item for one affected teacher, course, and assignment.

    1. Confirm deployment and activation
      • In Schoology, a System Admin must launch the Microsoft Education app from a course.
      • Confirm that first-time configuration was completed.
      • Confirm a Microsoft 365 Global Administrator granted the requested tenant consent. The configuration changes from Admin Consent to Reconsent after consent has been completed.^2^
      • In Schoology → Organization Apps, locate Microsoft Education, select Install/Remove, and confirm it is installed for the affected courses—or for All Courses.^3^
    2. Validate identity matching
      • For the affected teacher and students, the Schoology Email field must exactly contain their Microsoft 365/Entra UPN or primary email address.
      • Check every affected course, not only the teacher account.
      This mapping is required for the LTI app to match teachers and students when populating Class Notebooks, assigning permissions, and synchronizing grades.^3^
    3. Validate the course-to-Team relationship
      • Confirm each affected Schoology section is connected to the intended Microsoft class team.
      • Compare membership and roles: teachers must be Team owners, and students must be Team members.
      • Correct mismatches before retesting with a new assignment.^4^
    4. Capture assignment-link diagnostics
      • Open the affected Schoology course.
      • Select Teams Assignments from the primary course menu.
      • Record the assignment’s sync status, last-sync time, and any error.
      • Test with one newly created assignment after the preceding corrections.
      Not Synced indicates a broken connection, while Error indicates that an update failed.^5^ This page primarily reports existing linked assignments and Teams-to-Schoology synchronization; an assignment whose creation or linking failed before a record was created might not appear there, so absence is also useful evidence but not a diagnosis.
    5. Check browser prerequisites
      • Allow cookies and pop-ups for Microsoft apps during the Schoology LTI launch.
      • Sign in with the district Microsoft 365 account when first opening the integration.^3^

    These checks identify configuration or mapping failures but do not, by themselves, prove which one is responsible in this tenant.

    Only if the notebooks came from classic OneNote LTI

    First determine whether each notebook was created:

    • directly in Teams;
    • through the classic OneNote LTI 1.1 app; or
    • through the new Microsoft 365 LTI.

    Do not migrate a Teams-created notebook solely because Schoology cannot currently find it. Repair the Schoology LTI/course association and continue managing that notebook in Teams.

    If IT confirms a notebook was created through the classic OneNote LTI 1.1, there is no automatic migration into a Microsoft 365 LTI Class Notebook. The supported path is to create a new notebook through the Microsoft 365 LTI OneNote experience and copy the required sections/pages from the old notebook. Existing classic notebooks remain accessible directly through Microsoft 365.^6^

    Escalation threshold

    If activation, consent, app deployment, identity matching, Team roles, browser prerequisites, and a clean test assignment all pass, this requires tenant-side investigation rather than more teacher troubleshooting. Ask the district administrator to update the Microsoft case with:

    • affected Schoology course and Team;
    • teacher UPN, redacted in any public post;
    • whether the notebook originated in Teams, classic LTI, or new LTI;
    • assignment sync status/error and timestamp;
    • confirmation that admin consent and LTI activation are complete;
    • confirmation that Schoology email values match Entra identities.

    LMS and Microsoft 365 administrators can engage Microsoft Education Support for LTI deployment and configuration failures.^3^

    Hello @FUNK, MICHELLE

    Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Forum.

    It's unfortunate that your Teams could synchronize properly with Schoology.

     Since your case is already being handled by the Microsoft Support team, I'd recommend replying to the most recent email from your assigned support engineer and asking for an update. This helps keep all communication tied to the active case and lets the engineer know you're still waiting for progress on the investigation.

    In the meanwhile, as you are interacting with the Microsoft Support team as long as the issue is about two apps integrated, I would also recommend raising a ticket to the Schoology support team to investigate further on the Schoology side.
