Outlook email sending not working although I can receive emails AND my drafts sync

Hi,

I am using the classic outlook on my windows desktop pc. I have logged in with two different email accounts - both IMAP. I already know that both accounts work on the online versions of the providers, as well as on my laptop's outlook. I have also verified that the IMAP and SMTP usernames and ports (993, 465 respectively) are correct.

The problem is that I cannot send any emails out. I get a sending error of 0x8004DF0A, and they all get stuck in outbox and never leave. However, I can write drafts, and the drafts get synced with my other devices fine, which I find very odd.

How do I fix this? thank you.

Hi @Seijun Stokes

If you’re using classic Outlook for Windows, first check whether your symptoms match those in Microsoft’s “The operation failed” troubleshooting guide

If the problem persists, create a new Outlook profile and add the affected email account to it. Keep your existing profile and try sending a test email from the new one

Let me know how it goes

For classic Outlook, drafts syncing but sent mail staying in Outbox usually means the account can connect enough to sync folders, but sending over SMTP is failing.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Check whether Outlook is offline
      • In Outlook, look at the status bar at the bottom.
      • If it shows Disconnected, Working Offline, or Trying to connect…, go to Send/Receive on the ribbon and select Work Offline to switch back online.
      • Then try Send/Receive again.
    2. Confirm the internet connection from the PC where classic Outlook fails
      • Open a browser on that desktop and verify normal web access.
      • If the desktop has intermittent connectivity, Outlook can sync some items but still fail to send reliably.
    3. Repair the Outlook account/profile
      • Since the same IMAP accounts work in webmail and on another Outlook device, the issue is likely local to this Outlook profile.
      • Go to Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles.
      • Create a new profile, add the email account again, and test sending.
      • This is a standard fix for send/receive problems in classic Outlook.
    4. Start Outlook in safe mode
      • Press the Windows key, type outlook.exe /safe, and press Enter.
      • Try sending a new test message.
      • If sending works in safe mode, an add-in is likely interfering. In that case, creating a new Outlook profile is recommended.
    5. Repair the Outlook program
      • If the problem continues, run an Office repair for classic Outlook.
      • This can take up to about 30 minutes.
    6. Check whether Outlook needs SMTP authentication before sending
      • One documented cause of send failures with POP3 or IMAP accounts is that the account is not configured to log on to the incoming server before sending mail, while the mail provider requires authentication for SMTP.
      • Use Outlook to repair the email account or review the account’s outgoing server authentication settings.
    7. Recheck recent password changes
      • If the password was changed on the provider website, Outlook must be updated with the new password as well.
    8. Check antivirus email scanning
      • Some antivirus products scan email and can block sending/receiving if they detect a problem.
      • If antivirus email scanning is enabled, check that product’s help guidance.

Because both IMAP accounts send correctly in webmail and on another laptop, the strongest next step is to create a new classic Outlook profile on the affected desktop, then test sending before reinstalling or making broader changes.
