I recently received a new Iphone. After setting the new phone up I have issues logging into my Microsoft authenticator account.

The error code is 50089

Error 50089 commonly occurs after changing phones when the sign-in session expired or the MFA method on the new device cannot be validated.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Start a fresh sign-in session.
      • If signing in through a browser, use a private/incognito window.
      • Turn off VPN if one is enabled.
      • If possible, try a different network.
    2. Check the Microsoft Authenticator app on the new iPhone.
      • Make sure the app is updated to the latest version.
      • Make sure notifications are enabled.
      • Make sure the app is unlocked.
      • Verify the iPhone has internet access.
      • Check that Date & time settings are correct.
      • If needed, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
    3. If the account was restored to the new phone and shows "Sign in to restore your account" or "Sign in to add your account", open that account in Authenticator and sign in again.
      • For restored accounts, enter the password and complete any additional verification requested.
      • Work or school accounts must be signed in and registered again after restore.
    4. If the sign-in page offers it, select "I can’t use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now" or "Sign in another way" and use another registered method such as phone, email, passkey, or security key.
    5. If Restore from backup is needed on Authenticator:
      • On Android, it must be selected before signing in. If already signed in, sign out first.
      • If restore is unavailable, confirm backup was enabled on the old phone, the same recovery account is being used, and the restore is being done to the same device type.
    6. If authentication still fails with "Authentication did not complete", also verify:
      • Notifications are not silent or disabled.
      • Airplane mode is off.
      • Battery optimization is not interfering with the app.

If this is a work or school account and no alternate sign-in method works, the organization’s IT admin should reset MFA and require re-registration. In Microsoft Entra admin center, the admin can go to Identity > Users > All users > [affected user] > Authentication methods and select Require re-register MFA.

If this is the only global admin account in the tenant and access is completely blocked, Microsoft Support is required for tenant recovery.

If this is a personal Microsoft account, after trying the steps above, send logs from Authenticator using top-level menu > Send feedback and then contact Support.

    Dear @Kasper Richardt Tejlmand ,

Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

First of all, I would like to clarify that this is a community forum where users help one another. No one here, including myself, has access to your Microsoft 365 tenant, account details, billing information, or authentication settings.

Regarding this situation, the error code 50089 generally occurs when the sign-in session expires or the authentication token becomes invalid before the verification process can be completed.

To better understand the situation, could you please confirm the following:

    • Is this a work/school account or a personal Microsoft account?
    • Do you still have access to your old phone where Microsoft Authenticator was previously configured?
    • When you attempt to sign in, do you receive the verification code by SMS/email, or is no code received at all?

If you still have access to the old phone, try approving the sign-in request or removing and re-registering the Authenticator app after successfully signing in.

If this is a personal account, kindly let me know so I can provide you with appropriate steps.

If this is a work or school account with no alternative sign-in methods available and you're an end-user, please reach out to your IT administrator for assistance. If you’re unable to sign in due to a phone change, a new phone number, or issues receiving your authentication code, your IT administrator can help by updating your authentication methods or revoking and re-registering your authentication.

For detailed guidance, ask your IT administrator to review the step-by-step instructions provided in the referenced article: Manage user authentication options

Here's how to find your IT Admin: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? (please also kindly reach out to your colleagues, managers, etc. to see if they have the IT department contact)

If you're an admin, please check to see if there are other IT admins in your organization who can help you with the reset.

If you're the only admin, in this situation, the Microsoft Data Protection Team has tools and processes in place to verify identity and regain access to administrator accounts.

Please let me know if you're the only admin of your organization so that I could provide you with suitable steps accordingly.

Any updates you’re able to share would be really helpful.

I'm here and happy to help! Thank you for your kindness and patience!
