“Can customers audit the actual inference region of Azure OpenAI Global deployments?

We use Azure OpenAI resources in Sweden Central with Global deployments. We understand that inference may occur outside Europe. We want to measure how often this actually happens.

Do x-ms-region and azureml-served-by-cluster identify the regional API frontend, or the location where GPU inference actually executes?

If they identify only the frontend, is the actual inference region exposed through any response header, Azure Monitor metric, or diagnostic log? Can it be retrieved retrospectively?

Please distinguish resource/endpoint location from actual model execution location, and confirm whether internal cross-region routing and retries are reflected. A confirmation that this information is currently unavailable to customers would also answer our question.

The context confirms the deployment behavior, but it does not document any customer-visible way to audit the actual inference execution region for Azure OpenAI Global deployments.

    Supported distinctions:

    • Resource/endpoint location: the Azure AI Foundry or Azure OpenAI resource is created in a specific Azure region such as Sweden Central.
    • Data at rest: remains in the geography of that resource.
    • Actual model execution for Global deployments: prompts and responses can be processed in any Azure region where the model is deployed.
    • Data Zone deployments: processing stays within the Microsoft-defined data zone, not necessarily the exact resource region.
    • Regional/standard regional deployments: processing stays in the region associated with the deployment.

For the Sweden Central + Global deployment scenario, the documented guarantee is only that Global deployments may route inference to any Azure region where the model is deployed. The context does not state that response headers, Azure Monitor metrics, or diagnostic logs expose the final GPU inference region.

    On the specific headers mentioned:

    • The context contains no documentation for x-ms-region.
    • The context contains no documentation for azureml-served-by-cluster.
    • The context therefore does not support treating either header as proof of the actual model execution region.

On retrospective retrieval and internal routing/retries:

    • The context does not document any supported customer method to retrieve the actual inference region retrospectively.
    • The context does not document whether internal cross-region routing or retries are surfaced to customers in headers, metrics, or logs.

Based on the available documentation, the confirmed customer-visible facts are:

    1. A resource can be located in Sweden Central while Global inference is processed elsewhere.
    2. For Data Zone deployments, processing remains within the applicable zone, not necessarily Sweden Central itself.
    3. For regional deployments, processing remains in the deployment region.
    4. No customer-facing mechanism is documented here for auditing the exact execution region per request or after the fact.
