Every time I try to use my copilot sidebar it tells me this exactly: "Restart Edge to get the latest version of Copilot. Your account and chats are moving over. If you don't sign in to the new experience by December 31, 2026, your Copilot history and content will be deleted." My Microsoft edge is up to date, and I have restarted my Microsoft edge and my computer numerous times, and it is still not working. please help.

    Hi JO JO,

I understand that Edge is already up to date and that restarting both Edge and the computer has not cleared the message.

As a quick check, please open Copilot on the web in a regular Edge tab and confirm whether you can start a new conversation there. If Copilot works on the website but the sidebar continues to show the restart message, the issue is likely limited to the Edge sidebar rather than the Copilot account migration itself.

In that case, try repairing Microsoft Edge:

    • Close all Edge windows.
    • Open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    • Find Microsoft Edge, select the three-dot menu, and choose Modify.
    • Select Repair, then reopen Edge and test the Copilot sidebar again.

Repairing Edge should not remove your browsing data or settings. You can find Microsoft’s instructions here: What to do if Microsoft Edge isn’t working.

If Copilot also fails on the website, please let me know whether you are using a personal Microsoft account, a work or school account, or a Google/Apple sign-in. Please do not post the actual email address publicly. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Sign in at https://copilot.com with the same personal account previously used for Copilot; the message is part of the Copilot account-and-content migration, so repeatedly updating or restarting Edge will not complete the required account sign-in.^1^

    Complete the migration

    1. Open an InPrivate window in Edge with Ctrl+Shift+N.
    2. Go to https://copilot.com.
    3. Sign in using the exact method previously used:
      • Select Continue with Microsoft for a personal Microsoft account.
      • Select Continue with Google or Continue with Apple if that was the original sign-in method.
    4. Confirm that Copilot opens and permits a new chat.
    5. Close the InPrivate window, reopen the Edge sidebar, and sign in with that same account if prompted.

Personal and work or school accounts remain separate. If multiple accounts appear, use Copilot’s account switcher to select the account containing the existing history. Eligible chats and content migrate automatically, although the transfer can take time and some functionality may be temporarily unavailable.^1^

Complete this sign-in before December 31, 2026 to preserve eligible content that has not yet migrated.^1^

If Copilot works on the website but not in the Edge sidebar

    Reset the sidebar’s authentication state:

    1. In Edge, select the profile icon in the upper-right corner.
    2. Sign out of the affected Edge profile.
    3. Sign back in with the same account that worked at Copilot.com.
    4. Close and reopen only the Copilot sidebar.

Microsoft documents signing out and back into the Edge profile when the sidebar cannot obtain a valid authentication token.^2^

If this is a managed work or school computer

Ask the administrator to open edge://policy and inspect EdgeSidebarAppUrlHostBlockList. This branch applies only if sidebar applications are restricted by organizational policy.

When the block list contains *, the corresponding allow list must include the Copilot internal URLs appropriate for the installed Edge version. Edge 146 and later require additional entries; an administrator must deploy them through Group Policy, Intune, or the organization’s device-management system.^2^

If the migration prompt remains everywhere

Report the migration problem from the updated Copilot page:

    1. Select … in the upper-right corner.
    2. Select Send feedback.
    3. Select Report a problem.
    4. Include the exact message, when it began, the operating system, the Edge version shown under Settings → About Microsoft Edge, and a screenshot.

This routes the issue as a Copilot migration problem rather than another Edge update or restart failure.^1^
