How can I fully update the built-in DISM component in Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021?

Hello Microsoft Windows Servicing Team,

I am working with Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 x64, currently targeting OS Build 19044.7811.

The built-in DISM version remains 10.0.19041.3636, even after installing cumulative Windows updates that significantly increase the OS build number.

I would like to clarify the following technical questions:

Does Microsoft provide an official update package specifically for the in-box DISM component in Windows 10?

Can the built-in DISM version be updated through cumulative updates (LCU), servicing stack updates (SSU), Update Stack Packages, Feature Updates, or annual Windows servicing releases?

If DISM is updated through these packages, which package IDs contain the updated DISM binaries?

Does such an update replace the complete DISM component as a coordinated set, including:

Dism.exe

  DismCore.dll

     DismApi.dll

        DismHost.exe

           DISM providers and dependent DLLs

           Is there an official Microsoft package or servicing method to update the entire in-box DISM suite without installing the Windows ADK or manually replacing individual files?

           Is there a documented version history or file manifest showing which Windows 10 cumulative updates have updated the in-box DISM binaries?
```I am specifically asking about the DISM component installed in:
`C:\Windows\System32`
I am **not** asking how to use a newer DISM version from the Windows ADK or another external location.
My objective is to update the complete built-in DISM suite through an officially supported Microsoft servicing mechanism, while keeping Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021.
I would appreciate a technical answer identifying the exact applicable KB packages, if such updates exist.
Thank you.
    Hello Ramin,
    Thank you for providing the details.
    The important distinction is between updating individual DISM files through normal Windows servicing and installing a separate update that replaces the complete in-box DISM suite.
    Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 is based on Windows 10 version 21H2, build 19044. The fact that your in-box DISM reports version 10.0.19041.3636 does not, by itself, mean that it is outdated. Windows 10 versions 2004 through 22H2 share the same underlying servicing platform, so DISM can retain the 19041 version base while the operating system reports build 19044.
    Standalone DISM update
    I could not identify a publicly documented Microsoft package specifically designed to upgrade the complete in-box DISM installation independently of Windows servicing. Microsoft distributes DISM as part of Windows and through the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK), but the ADK version does not automatically replace the DISM files in C:\Windows\System32.
    Updates through Windows servicing
    Cumulative Updates (LCUs) can update individual in-box DISM components when those files are included in the update package. However, this does not mean every LCU updates DISM or replaces the entire suite.
    Servicing Stack Updates (SSUs) and Update Stack Packages service Windows servicing and update infrastructure. They are not standalone upgrades for the complete DISM application. Similarly, moving from Windows 10 21H2 to 22H2 through the enablement package does not introduce a new underlying servicing platform.
    Therefore, Windows updates may update individual DISM files, but there is no documented guarantee that they replace every DISM component together.
    Which KB packages contain newer DISM binaries?
    I have not identified a Microsoft-published list that tracks which KB updates modify the in-box DISM components in Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021. Whether a particular update changes DISM can generally only be determined by reviewing the contents of that update and the versions of the affected files. The operating system build number alone is insufficient to determine which DISM components, if any, were updated.
    Does an update replace the complete DISM suite?
    Not necessarily. The in-box installation includes Dism.exe, DismCore.dll, DismApi.dll, DismHost.exe, DISM providers, and their dependencies. An update to one of these files does not confirm that the remaining components were updated as well. A complete replacement would need to be verified by comparing the package contents with the installed files and their versions.
    Supported method to update the complete in-box installation
    The supported approach is to keep Windows fully serviced using Windows Update or the applicable packages in the Microsoft Update Catalog for Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021. However, I could not identify a separate Microsoft-supported procedure that upgrades the entire in-box DISM suite independently of normal Windows servicing.
    I would not recommend manually copying or replacing DISM executables, DLLs, providers, or other files in C:\Windows\System32. These components are part of the Windows servicing environment, and replacing selected files can cause version mismatches or servicing problems.
    DISM version history and file manifests
    I could not identify a consolidated public Microsoft document mapping each Windows update to the versions of all DISM executables, DLLs, providers, and dependencies. Microsoft publishes Windows release and update histories, and individual update packages can be inspected to determine whether specific DISM files were included or changed. However, this is different from having an official, consolidated DISM version history.
    The following Microsoft documentation may be useful:
    Conclusion
    For Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, individual DISM components may be updated through normal Windows servicing. However, I could not identify a separately documented Microsoft package or supported procedure that updates the complete in-box DISM suite independently of the standard Windows servicing process.
    Therefore, seeing DISM version 10.0.19041.3636 on a system running OS Build 19044.7811 is not, by itself, evidence that a DISM update is missing or that the installation is not fully serviced.
    I hope this clarifies how the in-box DISM components are serviced in Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021.
