Enable Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web in Edge; if it is already enabled and Copilot still recognizes the tab title but cannot read its content, the symptom matches a recently reported Edge/Copilot regression rather than an account or subscription mismatch.
Restore page-context access
- In Edge, select … (Settings and more) → Settings → Copilot and AI.
- Turn on Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.
- Close the Copilot pane and reopen it from the Copilot button in the upper-right corner.
- Open a normal public webpage and request:
- “Summarize my current page.”
- If using Browse with Copilot: “On my current page, summarize the main points.”
The Context Clues setting controls access to the current page, including its content or screenshots. When it is off, Copilot cannot answer from browsing content even though it may still know the page URL or title.^1^ Microsoft also documents that Copilot can use the current page, open tabs, and browser history for prompts that require page content.^2^
If Context Clues is already enabled
Recent reports describe Copilot detecting the active tab or page title but failing to read the page content, including failures after a recent Copilot change. No official service-health advisory or confirmed root cause is currently available for those reports.^3^^4^
Use these checks to distinguish that regression from a local Edge-profile problem:
- Test a supported page
- Use a public HTML webpage first.
- Avoid private PDFs and restricted or sensitive sites. Microsoft states that page-context questions are not supported on private PDFs, and some sites can be blocked by policy or security controls.^5^
- Update Edge
- Open
edge://settings/help.
- Let Edge install any available update, then select Restart.
- Repeat the public-page summary test. Edge updates are installed from … → Help and feedback → About Microsoft Edge.^6^
- Test a clean Edge profile
- Select the profile icon → Set up a new profile → Personal.
- Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account.
- Enable Context Clues and test the same public page.
Edge profiles maintain separate settings and extensions.^7^ If the clean profile works, the failure is local to the original profile. In that case, clear Copilot site data in the original profile or disable extensions selectively rather than replacing the working profile immediately.
If both profiles fail on multiple public pages while Context Clues is enabled, further profile resets or reinstalling the standalone Copilot app are unlikely to address the Edge page-context path.
Report the persistent regression
Press Alt+Shift+I in Edge, or open … → Help and feedback → Send feedback.^8^
Include:
- Edge version from
edge://settings/help
- Whether Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web is enabled
- Whether Copilot sees the tab title but not its contents
- The exact error text, if any
- Whether the same public page fails in a clean Edge profile
- A diagnostic-data attachment and screenshot, after removing personal information
The matching recent reports do not yet contain an accepted resolution, so feedback with diagnostics is the appropriate escalation when both the regular and clean profiles reproduce the failure.
