A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If you know the current password but cannot use Authenticator or any registered verification method, start signing in, select I don’t have any of these at the Verify your identity screen, and follow the prompts to replace your security information.^1^
Recover the personal Hotmail/Microsoft account
Since changing the password has already failed to resolve the loop, do not keep resetting it. Instead:
- Open the Microsoft Sign-in Helper and enter the exact address or phone number associated with the account:
https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2214157
The tool checks the account and directs you to the recovery options available for it.^2^ - At Verify your identity, select I don’t have any of these if it is displayed. Follow the prompts to replace the inaccessible security information. Changing all security information can restrict the account for 30 days, so preserve any method that still works.^1^
- If Use a different way to sign in, Show more verification options, or I don’t have my Authenticator app appears, select it and use an already registered email or phone method.
- If you previously saved a 10-digit recovery code when enabling two-step verification, choose the recovery-code option and enter it. Check your password manager, secure notes, or printed records.^3^
- If the code is being sent to another Microsoft mailbox, such as one Outlook/Hotmail account verifying another, keep the verification page open and access the second mailbox in a separate InPrivate/private browser window. Otherwise, signing into the second account can sign the browser out of the account requesting the code.^1^
Avoid repeatedly requesting codes. Excessive requests can trigger a temporary block; wait at least 24 hours without further attempts, then try once using a familiar device, location, and another registered verification method.^1^
When to use the account recovery form
Use https://account.live.com/acsr only if the normal methods and security-information replacement are unavailable and two-step verification is not enabled. Complete it from a familiar device and location and provide previous passwords and other accurate account details. The recovery form cannot be used when two-step verification is enabled.^4^
Support can guide you through these processes, but it cannot manually disable two-factor authentication. If necessary, open https://support.microsoft.com/contactus using another Microsoft account and request account-security support.^3^
Because the account has not been used for over a year, it may still exist. However, an account may have been deleted if it has not been signed in to for more than two years, in which case it cannot be reopened.^2^
Which account and address to use
- Addresses such as
[Email],[Email], and[Email]can all be personal Microsoft accounts. Use the exact address and domain originally registered;.comand country-specific domains are different.^5^ - Hotmail is now Outlook.com, and the Hotmail password is the same as the Microsoft account password.^6^
- A work or school account is separate from a personal Microsoft account and is managed by an organization. If Teams is requesting an organizational account, contact that organization’s IT administrator to reset its MFA registration. Personal and work/school accounts cannot be merged.^7^
Submit the sign-in feedback to Teams
Microsoft Q&A is a support forum rather than the Teams product-feedback channel. Once Teams is accessible:
- Desktop: Settings and more → Feedback → Report a problem or Suggest a feature.
- Android/iOS: profile picture → Settings → Help & feedback → Send feedback or Suggest a feature.^8^
Do not include passwords, verification codes, recovery codes, or other private account details in feedback or public posts.
