For Microsoft 365 apps, the Copilot entry point may not be missing—it may have moved. In Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Copilot is now commonly opened from the Copilot Dynamic Action Button in the lower-right corner of the document rather than from the ribbon.
If it still does not appear, use this checklist:
- Check the lower-right corner first
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- Look for the Copilot Dynamic Action Button in the lower-right corner of the document, workbook, or presentation.
- In some builds, it can also be moved next to the ribbon.
- Refresh the Microsoft 365 license
- On Windows: open any Microsoft 365 app, then go to File > Account > Update License.
- Close and restart all Microsoft 365 apps after the refresh.
- On Mac: open any Microsoft 365 app, select the app name menu at the top, then About <app name> > More Info... > Refresh License.
- Close open documents and restart the apps.
- Make sure the apps are fully updated
- Install the latest Microsoft 365 build.
- If this is a university-managed account, check the update channel with IT
- For business users, Copilot features are not available in Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel.
- Copilot requires Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel in Microsoft 365 apps.
- This setting is typically controlled by the organization, so a university IT admin or help desk may need to change it.
- The web versions of Microsoft 365 apps can be used in the meantime without a channel update.
- Check privacy settings
- In a Microsoft 365 app, go to File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
- Confirm these are turned on:
- Experiences that analyze your content
- All connected experiences
- If the Microsoft 365 apps are managed by the university, these settings may be controlled by IT.
- Confirm the account has access to Copilot
- The Copilot button only appears for users who have access to Copilot.
- If Copilot is not included for that university account or is restricted by organization settings, the button will not appear.
For a university licensing scenario, the most likely blockers are:
- the account does not have Copilot access assigned,
- the device is on Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, or
- privacy settings are managed by the university.
If the steps above do not restore it, the next action is to contact the University of Guelph IT help desk or Microsoft 365 admin and ask them to verify:
- Copilot access is assigned to the account,
- the device is on Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel, and
- connected experiences required for Copilot are enabled.
