Sharing short videos in teams chat doesn't work very well

I share a 20 second video on teams and the entire movie plays with the play scrubber overlay. This is true when I move the mouse away and everything. When pressing play on a short tiny movie in teams chat just show the movie right away; the user should have to really hover/click on the movie to see the play controls etc. Sharing short fun movie clips in teams chat is basically unusable in its current form.

    Dear Dave Alger,

Based on the information provided, this may be related to how the inline video player currently behaves for this file. To help us narrow it down, could you please confirm the following?

    1. Are you using the Teams desktop app or Teams on the web?
    2. Does the same behavior happen if you upload the clip as an .mp4 instead of a .mov?
    3. Do other people in the chat see the controls stay on screen for the same message?
    4. Did this start recently, for example after a Teams update?

In the meantime, you can try these steps, starting with the least disruptive:

    1. Play the same message in Teams on the web and in the desktop app and note whether the behavior differs.
    2. Move your cursor completely outside the video card, wait a few seconds, then refresh or restart Teams and play the clip again.
    3. Re-upload the clip as an .mp4 and compares the playback.
    4. For a cleaner viewing experience, select the Pop out or Full screen button on the player, or select the … menu on the file card and open the file in your browser.

If the controls still don't hide after the steps above, I sincerely recommend you go to Feedback community to vote this similar feedback: (find out similar feedback, if not provide the feedback forum link Ideas · Community). Your feedback has been duly noted and is highly valued, as it provides with essential insights to continue improving and refining the products and services in the future.

Please notice and accept my apologies that as moderators in the community, we are not supported for the product design and have limited resources for the advanced info for Microsoft products. To help you send your feedback and requirement to the related development team, we have redirected you to the correct path.

Again, I truly appreciate your patience and understanding. Thank you for your precious time.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Teams does not document a user or administrator setting that changes when the inline video player’s controls disappear, so request this interface change through Teams’ built-in feedback command.

Videos attached to chat messages automatically receive a preview and can play directly within the chat or channel ^1^. Uploading a video directly also stores it in OneDrive and places a playable video link in the conversation ^2^. Neither document provides an option to hide the scrubber or show controls only on hover.

    Submit the design request

In the Teams desktop or web client:

    1. Select Settings and more (…).
    2. Select Feedback → Report a problem.
    3. Describe the request specifically, for example:

For short videos played inline in Teams chat, hide the playback controls after playback begins and show them again only when the pointer enters the video or the user clicks/taps it. Currently, the persistent scrubber and buttons obscure much of a small video.

    4. Attach the screenshot and include:
      • Whether it happens in desktop, web, or both.
      • The operating system and Teams version.
      • The video format, such as .mov.
      • That moving the pointer outside the player does not dismiss the controls.
      • Whether this occurs for every video or only portrait/small videos.

This sends the report to the relevant Teams product team ^3^.

If Feedback is unavailable, an administrator may have disabled in-product feedback. Use the Microsoft Feedback portal instead: search for an existing Teams request and upvote it, or create a new one. Similar reports may be grouped to help establish their impact ^4^.

Because the video plays successfully and the concern is how its controls remain displayed, file this primarily as a design/feature suggestion. If controls cover the video only on one client but disappear normally in another, report it as a problem and identify the affected client and version.
