Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Yes, sometimes.
- In Outlook on the web, check Deleted Items first.
- Select Recover items deleted from this folder and restore any messages that are still available.
- Also check Archive and Junk Email in case the attacker moved messages instead of deleting them.
- Review account activity to confirm whether there was unusual sign-in activity and secure the account.
- Change or reset the password after running a full malware scan on the PC used to access the account.
- Check Outlook settings for anything the attacker may have changed, especially connected accounts, forwarding, and automatic replies.
If the missing emails do not appear in Deleted Items or Recover items deleted from this folder, they may have been permanently removed and might not be recoverable.
If the account is temporarily blocked because of unusual activity, unblocking requires a password reset. If that does not work, use the Microsoft account sign-in recovery flow.
To help prevent this again, enable stronger sign-in protection such as Microsoft Authenticator, passwordless sign-in, or another verification method.
