You can download Windows 10 installation media at no charge, but your Windows 7 license no longer qualifies for a free Windows 10 activation, and Windows 10 itself reached end of support on October 14, 2025.^1^^2^
For an old Toshiba laptop, first consider replacing it with a supported Windows 11 computer rather than paying to install an unsupported operating system.
If you still need the Windows 10 download
- Check Toshiba’s support site for your exact laptop model.
- Confirm that Windows 10 drivers exist for its display, Wi-Fi, audio, and chipset.
- Also confirm it meets the minimum requirements: a 1 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM for 32-bit Windows, 32 GB storage, DirectX 9 graphics with a WDDM 1.0 driver, and an 800×600 display.^3^
- Back up your personal files to external storage.
- On a working Windows computer, open Microsoft’s Download Windows 10 page.
- Under Create Windows 10 Installation Media, select Download Now, then run
MediaCreationTool.exe.^4^ - Use a blank USB drive of at least 8 GB. Its existing contents will be deleted.
- In the tool, select Create installation media for another PC, then choose the required language, edition, and architecture.
Important 32-bit limitation
For an upgrade that keeps your existing programs and files, use 32-bit Windows 10 media and start setup.exe from inside Windows 7:
- Insert the USB while Windows 7 is running.
- Open Computer in Windows Explorer.
- Open the USB and run setup.exe.
- Follow Windows Setup and enter a valid Windows 10 product key when requested.^5^
Changing from 32-bit Windows 7 to 64-bit Windows 10 cannot be done as an in-place upgrade. It requires reformatting the drive, performing a clean installation, and reinstalling all applications and files. The processor must also support 64-bit Windows.^6^
Activation
- A Windows 7 product key cannot now create a new free Windows 10 entitlement; that upgrade route has ended.^1^
- If this exact laptop previously ran an activated copy of Windows 10, it may already have a digital license and could reactivate after reinstalling the same edition.
- Otherwise, installation media alone does not provide a license. Windows 10 requires a valid product key or digital license.^7^
Because Windows 10 no longer receives normal security fixes, using it online without an applicable Extended Security Updates arrangement carries security risk.^8^
