If Find My Device in your Microsoft account shows that the feature is disabled or displays an outdated location, this may indicate that your device is currently turned off, offline, or unable to connect to the internet.

Please keep in mind that Find My Device relies on certain requirements to work properly. The feature must have been enabled on your computer beforehand, and the device must be powered on and connected to the internet for its location to be updated. If the computer is offline or turned off, Microsoft may only display its last known location rather than its current location.

If your computer is lost or stolen, I also recommend changing your Microsoft account password and reviewing your recent sign-in activity to help protect your account.

The computer had been reporting it's location previously. It's currently showing the location where I previously lived. It has not updated since the end of 2025. The computer is on every day and connected to the internet the whole time. I just turned off the option to find device in the computer settings then back on and now the account management gives me the option to find device where previously it only showed location disabled. Unfortunately when I press the find button I get an error that states the service is not currently working and try again later.

I recommend removing the device from your Microsoft account's device list and then registering it again. This may help refresh its connection to Microsoft's Find My Device service and resolve the outdated location issue.

Before proceeding, make sure you have your BitLocker recovery key saved. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices, find your computer, and select Remove device. Restart your computer, sign in again using the same Microsoft account, and go to Settings > Privacy & security > Find my device to make sure the feature is turned on. Finally, check your Microsoft account again to see if the device is listed.
