Excel for Mac 16.114.3 – pivot table refresh crashes Excel after it downloads its online settings

Since 3 November, every pivot table refresh, create or Clear All crashes Excel for Mac 16.114.3 (macOS 15.8.2, Intel). It happens with every workbook, even a new file with two columns of numbers. Add-ins, preferences and my files have been ruled out.

What I found: if I reset Excel’s local registry file, the first session works. Once Excel has gone online and downloaded its feature settings from Microsoft, pivots crash from the next launch onwards. With Wi‑Fi off and a fresh registry, pivots keep working across several launches, including after saving. It looks like one of the pivot table features being rolled out is faulty.

Microsoft Support (case 7111266321) suggested posting here. I’ve also sent feedback from inside Excel, and I have a detailed test log I can share with the Excel team.

Is anyone else on Excel for Mac seeing pivot crashes since early November?

    Hello,

I've noticed several other users reporting the same issue in this forum over the past 24–48 hours. However, I haven't seen any official acknowledgment from Microsoft yet, so this appears to be an emerging issue rather than an isolated case.

Based on user reports, switching to the Beta channel (version 16.116, build 26102843) appears to resolve the issue. However, please note that this is an unofficial workaround, not a confirmed fix from Microsoft. Beta builds may also introduce other issues.

Since this is a community support forum primarily intended for troubleshooting from independent users, not from official support, no one here can speak on behalf of Microsoft's Excel product team or confirm when a fix will be released.

I strongly encourage you to report this issue directly through Excel's Help > Feedback feature, which you already did, so it is good!

I want to explain why this is important.

Community forum discussions help users troubleshoot problems and identify possible trends, but discussions here do not necessarily reach the engineers responsible for developing and maintaining the products.

Feedback submitted directly through the application can provide Microsoft's product team with valuable information, including your Excel version, macOS version, diagnostic information (where available), and the specific actions that trigger the crash.

When multiple users independently report the same issue, it helps Microsoft identify patterns, understand how widespread the problem is, reproduce it internally, and determine its priority for investigation and resolution.

Even if other users have already reported the same bug, your feedback still matters. Each additional report provides more evidence that this is a broader issue rather than an isolated problem with one user's computer or workbook.

Hopefully, with enough reports reaching the product team, Microsoft can investigate and address this issue promptly.

Thank you very much, this is very helpful, and it’s good to know others are seeing it too. An Excel update was offered to me today, so I’ll test that first, then “Clear Experimental Features”, and the Beta channel only if needed. I’ll post the results here.
