Share the Microsoft 365 Family subscription with your wife’s own Microsoft account, then have her accept the invitation and install Word on her Mac using that same account.

1. Share the subscription

If your wife is already listed as a member of the shared subscription, skip to step 2.

1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Services & subscriptions sharing page with the Microsoft account that owns the Family subscription.
2. Select Share.
3. Choose Email invite, enter your wife’s email address, and select Invite. Alternatively, choose Create link and send the link to her.
4. Do not send her your product key; Microsoft 365 Family sharing uses an invitation instead. If Share or Start sharing is unavailable, confirm that this account owns a Microsoft 365 Family subscription. A subscription that someone else shared with you cannot be shared onward.

2. Have your wife accept the invitation

On her MacBook, your wife should:

1. Open the invitation and select Accept or Get started.
2. Sign in with her own Microsoft account—not the subscription owner’s account. She can create one if necessary.
3. Select Join now to join the family group.

If she receives a message saying she is already in another family group, she must leave that group before joining yours.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Share your Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")

3. Install and activate Word on the Mac

After the invitation has been accepted:

1. Go to Microsoft 365 Apps and sign in with your wife’s Microsoft account.
2. Select Install apps in the upper-right corner.
3. Select Microsoft 365 apps if a menu appears.
4. When the download finishes, open Finder → Downloads.
5. Double-click Microsoft Office installer.pkg.
6. Select Continue, accept the license agreement, and select Install.
7. Enter the Mac login password if prompted, then select Close when installation finishes.
8. Open Launchpad → Microsoft Word.
9. Select Get Started and sign in with the same Microsoft account to activate Word.^3^

The installer normally includes the Microsoft 365 suite. To install only selected applications, choose Customize during installation and deselect the apps she does not want.^3^

If the subscription was purchased through Apple

If Microsoft 365 was purchased through Apple’s App Store rather than directly from Microsoft, download Word or the other Microsoft apps from the Mac App Store instead.^4^
