Azure App Service is a service used to create and deploy scalable, mission-critical web apps.
Microsoft Support must review the inaccessible subscription and the associated Azure for Students eligibility record; submit a subscription-management and eligibility-review request from the public Azure Support Ticket page rather than trying the portal again.^1^
Submit the request outside the inaccessible tenant
- Open the Azure Support Ticket page and select Create an incident. Billing and subscription-management support is available to Azure customers without a paid technical support plan.^1^
- Sign in with the personal Microsoft account when prompted.
- Request routing to Azure subscription management / Azure for Students eligibility.
- Use wording such as:
An Azure for Students subscription was created on 2026-10-16 using my university identity. My university has confirmed that this identity is prohibited from accessing the Azure portal. Academic verification on my personal Microsoft account succeeds, but enrollment returns “Unable to renew Azure for Students.”
Please verify my ownership and review both:
- cancellation of the inaccessible subscription; and
- release or correction of any Azure for Students eligibility/redemption record preventing enrollment with my personal Microsoft account.
I can provide the subscription ID, verification evidence, error screenshot, and university helpdesk confirmation through this private support case.
The second request is important because Azure for Students is limited to one subscription per eligible customer.^2^ Cancellation alone is not documented as automatically clearing an eligibility or redemption record. Microsoft Q&A guidance indicates that such records require a backend review and cannot be changed through Microsoft Community or the portal.^3^
The ticket page may still invoke an Azure sign-in flow. If it produces the same AADSTS16000 failure:
- Use the Get Help app in Windows while signed in with the personal Microsoft account.
- Enter Azure subscription cancellation and Azure for Students eligibility record.
- Select Contact Support, choose the closest Azure/account-and-billing category, and request chat or callback. Contact methods depend on region, scenario, and operating hours.^4^
- As an education-specific fallback, use the Microsoft student-support route identified in the Azure Education documentation: https://aka.ms/studentsupport. That route is documented in the Azure Education/Dev Tools context, so it may redirect the case rather than directly process an Azure for Students cancellation.^5^
Information to provide privately
Include only in the private support case:
- Subscription ID and approximate activation time
- Both account identities involved
- Screenshot of “Unable to renew Azure for Students”
- Screenshot or full text of
AADSTS16000, including timestamp and correlation/session identifiers if displayed - University helpdesk confirmation that the school identity cannot access Azure Portal
- Confirmation that academic verification succeeded on the personal account
- Whether the inaccessible subscription might contain resources or data
Do not post the subscription ID, email addresses, helpdesk ticket contents, or sign-in diagnostic identifiers publicly.
Support must verify ownership and cancellation authority. Azure’s documented support process says cancellation or account-specific changes require account billing-administrator authority, so access to the university mailbox or its helpdesk statement might not by itself be sufficient.^6^ Complete removal or transfer of the student entitlement therefore cannot be guaranteed from the personal account alone.
Cancellation warning
Before authorizing cancellation, ask Support to confirm whether the inaccessible subscription contains resources or data that must be preserved. Cancellation disables services, and retained data may eventually be permanently deleted; Microsoft recommends backing up required data and stopping or removing resources first.^7^ Because portal access is impossible here, Support would need to help determine whether anything requires recovery before cancellation.
Microsoft Learn Q&A moderators cannot access or cancel subscriptions, so the request itself cannot be completed from this public thread.
