Cannot Activate Excel On Mac

Hi,

We currently have a user who is unable to activate Microsoft Excel on a Mac device.

To confirm, the following Microsoft 365 applications are working correctly and are activated:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Outlook

The issue appears to be isolated to Excel, which is failing to activate.

The user has a valid Microsoft 365 Business Premium licence assigned, so we are unsure why Word and Outlook are functioning correctly while Excel is not. They have mentioned it was activated before,

Has anyone encountered this issue before, or are there any troubleshooting steps you would recommend?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Cleon Russell,

Since Word and Outlook are already activated, I would first check whether Excel was installed from the same source and is using the same update channel. For example, a mixture of Mac App Store and Microsoft 365 portal installations can sometimes leave one application using different licensing components.

Please open Help > Check for Updates in Excel and install all available updates. Then compare the Excel and Word version numbers under About Excel and About Word.

It would also be useful to create a temporary macOS user account and test Excel there with the licensed work account. If Excel activates in the new macOS profile, the Microsoft 365 license itself is valid and the issue is likely limited to cached credentials or configuration in the original macOS profile.

If Excel remains in view-only mode in the new profile, the Microsoft 365 administrator can temporarily remove and reassign the user’s Microsoft 365 Apps license, allow some time for the change to synchronize, and then test activation again.

If the problem continues after those checks, Microsoft Support would need to review the tenant-side activation record, as this user-to-user community cannot access the organization’s licensing backend directly.

Select Use Another Account in Excel and sign in with the user’s licensed Microsoft 365 Business Premium work account; if Excel still remains view-only, reset the cached Office licensing credentials and reactivate the suite.

Microsoft 365 Business Premium includes the desktop applications, so the assigned plan supports Excel for Mac; the message normally indicates that Excel is not currently associating its installation with an eligible signed-in account.^1^

    1. Reactivate Excel with the licensed work account

    1. In the displayed dialog, select Use Another Account.
    2. Enter the exact work account to which Business Premium is assigned.
    3. Complete any multifactor-authentication prompt.
    4. Quit Excel using Excel > Quit Excel, then reopen it.
    5. Create a blank workbook and confirm that a cell can be edited and saved.

Office for Mac activation requires the user to sign in while online so that the Office Licensing Service can associate the installation with the licensed user.^2^

If more than one account is displayed, avoid selecting a personal Microsoft account, an old organizational account, or another cached account merely because Word or Outlook uses it.

    2. Reset the cached activation data

If the correct account still produces Ready to View Documents, use Microsoft’s procedure for an installation that is activated but continues to request activation:

    1. Quit all Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
    2. Open Spotlight, search for Keychain Access, and open it.
    3. Search for Office.
    4. Delete the data license file returned by that search.
    5. Reopen Excel and sign in with the Business Premium work account.

Microsoft lists this credential reset specifically for Office for Mac installations that remain prompted to activate.^3^

    3. Perform a complete license reset if necessary

This reset removes all Office licences on the Mac, so have the user’s work-account credentials and local administrator password available. Word and Outlook may also require reactivation afterward.

    1. Quit every Office application.
    2. Download and run Microsoft’s Office License Removal Tool.
    3. Open the downloaded .pkg file and select Continue.
    4. Select Install and enter a local administrator password if prompted.
    5. When removal completes, select Close.
    6. Open Excel and sign in with the licensed work account.
    7. If offered multiple licences, choose Microsoft 365 for Mac.
    8. Restart the Mac and test editing and saving in Excel.

These are Microsoft’s documented removal and reactivation steps.^4^

    If activation still fails

    • Check Office activations: Microsoft 365 admin center → Users → Active users → select the user → Account → Office activations → View Office activations. Deactivate an obsolete Mac installation only if the activation allowance has been reached.^2^
    • Check the exact error and macOS version: If Excel reports an error code rather than only the view-only message, use the matching error-specific procedure. Microsoft’s Mac activation page documents separate handling for codes such as 0xD000000C, 0xD0001043, and 0xD000001c.^3^
    • Reinstall only as the final step: After the licence reset, uninstall Office and reinstall Microsoft 365 from the licensed user’s Microsoft 365 Apps page, then activate again. This is the documented fallback when licence removal alone does not resolve activation.^3^
