Hi Microsoft Support Team,

I would like to know how to silently uninstall Microsoft Visio (Microsoft Visio - en-us) from Windows devices using a script.

Our objective is to deploy the uninstallation script remotely through ManageEngine Endpoint Central without requiring user interaction. Any recommended scripts or official documentation would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

    Dear @Mohd Marezuan Ahmad Marzuki ,

    Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

    For this scenario, the recommended approach depends on how Visio was originally installed. Microsoft provides the following documentation that may help:

    • For Click-to-Run versions of Visio, Microsoft recommends using the Configuration options for the Office Deployment Tool (ODT) and the <Remove> element to uninstall Visio silently. The uninstall command can then be deployed through endpoint management solutions such as ManageEngine Endpoint Central. Please refer to the Microsoft documentation for ODT configuration options and the <Remove> element.
    • If your Visio installation is MSI-based rather than Click-to-Run, the following Microsoft article on removing MSI-based Office products may also be helpful.

    I hope these resources point you in the right direction.

    Kindly let me know when there are updates or if you need further assistance. Any updates you’re able to share would be really helpful.

    I'm here and happy to help! Thank you for your kindness and patience!

    The uninstall method depends on Visio’s installation technology: use the Office Deployment Tool with a targeted <Remove> configuration for Click-to-Run Visio, or Endpoint Central’s MSI uninstall workflow for an MSI-based Visio installation.

    Microsoft 365 Visio, Visio 2019, Visio LTSC 2021, and Visio LTSC 2024 use Click-to-Run and can be managed with the Office Deployment Tool (ODT). Visio 2016 might be either Click-to-Run or MSI, so verify it first under Control Panel → Programs and Features or Visio → File → Account → About Visio.^1^

    1. Download and extract the latest ODT. It supplies setup.exe, which supports /configure mode for removing products.^2^
    2. Create Remove-Visio.xml in the same directory.
    3. Replace the product ID below with the ID matching the installed Visio edition.

    For Microsoft 365 Visio Plan 2:

    <Configuration>
      <Remove All="FALSE">
        <Product ID="VisioProRetail">
          <Language ID="en-us" />
        </Product>
      </Remove>
      <Display Level="None" AcceptEULA="TRUE" />
    </Configuration>

    The <Remove> element targets the specified product and language. To remove every installed language for that Visio product, omit the <Language> line. Do not use All="TRUE" because that removes all Microsoft 365 Apps products, including Office, Project, and Visio.^3^

    Use the appropriate product ID:

    Installed product Product ID
    Visio Plan 2 desktop app VisioProRetail
    Visio Professional 2021 Retail VisioPro2021Retail
    Visio Professional 2021 Volume VisioPro2021Volume
    Visio Standard 2021 Retail VisioStd2021Retail
    Visio Standard 2021 Volume VisioStd2021Volume
    Visio Professional 2024 Retail VisioPro2024Retail
    Visio Professional 2024 Volume VisioPro2024Volume
    Visio Standard 2024 Retail VisioStd2024Retail
    Visio Standard 2024 Volume VisioStd2024Volume

    Microsoft’s supported product-ID list should be used rather than deriving the ID from the “Microsoft Visio - en-us” display name.^4^

    Place this PowerShell script beside setup.exe and the XML:

    $folder = Split-Path -Parent $MyInvocation.MyCommand.Path
    $setup  = Join-Path $folder "setup.exe"
    $config = Join-Path $folder "Remove-Visio.xml"

    if (!(Test-Path $setup) -or !(Test-Path $config)) {
        Write-Error "ODT setup.exe or Remove-Visio.xml is missing."
        exit 2
    }

    $p = Start-Process $setup `
        -ArgumentList "/configure `"$config`"" `
        -Wait -PassThru
    exit $p.ExitCode

    ODT must run with local-administrator permissions. A successful configuration normally reports Products configured successfully; ODT troubleshooting logs are written under %TEMP%.^2^

    Deploy through Endpoint Central

    1. Package these three files:
      • setup.exe
      • Remove-Visio.xml
      • Remove-Visio.ps1
    2. In Endpoint Central, create a custom script or software-uninstallation package.
    3. Run:
    powershell.exe -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File ".\Remove-Visio.ps1"

    1. Configure execution in the system/computer context with administrative privileges.
    2. Test against one device, confirming that Visio is removed while Word, Excel, and other Office products remain installed.
    3. Deploy to the remaining device collection.

    Endpoint Central supports packaged software-uninstallation workflows and custom scripted uninstalls.^5^

    If Visio is MSI-based

    For an MSI installation—most commonly an older volume-licensed Visio 2016 or earlier—use Endpoint Central’s Uninstall MSI Software workflow with that installation’s MSI product code rather than the Click-to-Run XML.

    Avoid using <RemoveMSI /> as a generic Visio-only command: it can remove MSI-based Office, Visio, and Project products together. Microsoft also confirms that RemoveMSI cannot remove Click-to-Run Visio; Click-to-Run requires the <Remove> element.^6^

    Close Visio before deployment. Forcing Office applications to close can cause loss of unsaved work.
