Critical Excel for Mac Crash – PivotTable Functionality

Hello Microsoft Support Team,

I am experiencing a critical issue with Microsoft Excel on my MacBook Air.

System details:

  • Device: MacBook Air

RAM: 16 GB

macOS: 27

  • Excel version: 16.114.1

Issue: Excel crashes immediately whenever I select Insert → PivotTable.

The same issue occurs even in a completely new workbook. Therefore, this does not appear to be related to a specific Excel file.

I would appreciate technical assistance in identifying the root cause and providing a permanent solution.

    Hello,

I've noticed several other users reporting the same issue in this forum over the past few days. However, I haven't seen any official acknowledgment from Microsoft yet, so this appears to be an emerging issue rather than an isolated case.

Based on user reports, switching to the Beta channel (version 16.116, build 26102843) appears to resolve the issue. However, please note that this is an unofficial workaround, not a confirmed fix from Microsoft. Beta builds may also introduce other issues.

Another workaround reported by other user is

First, quit Excel completely. Then reopen Excel. Very important - don't open any workbook, not even a blank one. Just open the app itself.

Go to Help > Clear Application Data > clear Experimental Features.

    Once done, restart Excel.

    ========================

I also strongly encourage you to report this issue directly through Excel's Help > Feedback feature to make engineer team aware of this.

    Hi @Arun Chandramani

A crash on Insert > PivotTable even in a blank workbook points to the app build rather than your files. Microsoft hasn't listed this crash on its Excel for Mac known-issues page yet, and at least two other people have marked the same question, so it may be a new bug in this version combination (Excel 16.114.1 on macOS 27).

While waiting for a fix, try these:

    1. Update Excel. Go to Help > Check for Updates and install anything offered. Crash fixes often arrive in the next build.
    2. Try another way into the same feature. On the Insert tab, try Recommended PivotTables, or select your data range first and then insert. Some crashes only happen on one entry point to the dialog.
    3. Use Excel for the web for now. Open the file from OneDrive at office.com, build the PivotTable there, and save. You can keep working on it in the browser until a fix arrives.
    4. Send the crash report. When the Microsoft Error Reporting window appears, add a short note ("crash on Insert > PivotTable, blank workbook") and send it. Also use Help > Feedback in Excel. These reports are how Microsoft spots and tracks a new bug.

Keep an eye on Microsoft's "Fixes or workarounds for recent issues in Excel for Mac" page (linked below) for an official update.

Does the crash also happen with Recommended PivotTables, or only with the regular PivotTable button?

If one of these gets you working again, please consider accepting it as the answer. If it still crashes after updating, let me know and I'll be happy to keep helping.
