    Dear mkg Li,

If SharePoint links are breaking or becoming unavailable frequently, the cause is not always related to internet speed. A few common possibilities include:

1/ The file or folder may have been moved, renamed, or deleted after the link was created.

2/ Users may be sharing links that are tied to specific permissions (for example, "People with existing access" or "Specific people"), and changes to permissions can invalidate the link.

3/ The SharePoint site or document library may have been migrated, restored, or restructured, causing older URLs to no longer point to the correct location.

4/ Sync issues with the OneDrive sync client can sometimes create confusion between local and online locations.

5/ Browser cache, security software, VPNs, proxies, or network filtering can occasionally interfere with SharePoint access.

To help narrow this down, could you provide a bit more information?

    • Are the broken links pointing to files, folders, or entire SharePoint sites?
    • What error message do you receive when the link fails?
    • Does the issue affect multiple users or only you?
    • Are the links shared internally within your organization or with external users?
    • If you copy a fresh link from SharePoint, does it work temporarily and then break again later?

In the meantime, you can try the following:

Step 1: Use stable sharing links

Instead of copying the URL from your browser's address bar, use Share > Copy link in SharePoint. Consider using "People in your organization" links rather than links tied to specific users when appropriate.

Step 2: Avoid moving or renaming files/folders

Although SharePoint can often update links automatically, large-scale moves, renames, migrations, or library restructures can still cause link issues.

    Step 3: Check permissions

Verify that users still have access to the site, library, and document. Broken links sometimes occur when access is revoked or inherited permissions are changed.

Step 4: Test from SharePoint on the web

Open the file directly in SharePoint Online instead of through a synced local folder. If possible, you can also try opening the SharePoint link in an InPrivate/Incognito browser window. This helps rule out issues related to cached credentials, cookies, browser extensions, or corrupted browser data.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions or if I have misunderstood anything, please feel free to reach out. I'm looking forward to your update

Hi, this is rarely the internet connection. The usual causes are:

    1. Copying the address bar URL instead of using Share > Copy link. Address-bar links include the folder path, so they break as soon as someone renames or moves a folder. Links from Share > Copy link keep working after a move.
    2. Links in Excel or Word that point to synced files on a PC, such as C:\Users...\OneDrive. Those only work on that one computer. Insert links using the web link instead.
    3. "Specific people" links, which stop working when sharing or membership changes.

If your team often reorganises folders, settle on a fixed top-level structure and use Share links. Happy to help further if useful.
