Pivot Table crashes Excel using Office 365 on the MacOS

I'm running the latest version of Microsoft 365 (Version 16.114.3 (26102720)) for macOS. While trying to create a pivot table in Excel, it crashes and closes the Application. This happens continuously. What's even more embarrassing is that I was demoing how to use it during a class that I teach.

Hello,

I've noticed several other users reporting the same issue in this forum over the past 24–48 hours. However, I haven't seen any official acknowledgment from Microsoft yet, so this appears to be an emerging issue rather than an isolated case.

Based on user reports, switching to the Beta channel (version 16.116, build 26102843) appears to resolve the issue. However, please note that this is an unofficial workaround, not a confirmed fix from Microsoft. Beta builds may also introduce other issues.

Since this is a community support forum primarily intended for troubleshooting from independent users, not from official support, no one here can speak on behalf of Microsoft's Excel product team or confirm when a fix will be released.

I strongly encourage you to report this issue directly through Excel's Help > Feedback feature.

I want to explain why this is important.

Community forum discussions help users troubleshoot problems and identify possible trends, but discussions here do not necessarily reach the engineers responsible for developing and maintaining the products.

Feedback submitted directly through the application can provide Microsoft's product team with valuable information, including your Excel version, macOS version, diagnostic information (where available), and the specific actions that trigger the crash.

When multiple users independently report the same issue, it helps Microsoft identify patterns, understand how widespread the problem is, reproduce it internally, and determine its priority for investigation and resolution.

Even if other users have already reported the same bug, your feedback still matters. Each additional report provides more evidence that this is a broader issue rather than an isolated problem with one user's computer or workbook.

Hopefully, with enough reports reaching the product team, Microsoft can investigate and address this issue promptly.

Excel for Mac 16.114.3 has multiple matching PivotTable crash reports, so use Excel for the web for the immediate class/work requirement and install the next available Excel update rather than rebuilding the workbook or reinstalling Office.

    Immediate workaround

    1. Save the workbook to OneDrive or SharePoint.
    2. Open it in Excel for the web.
    3. Select the source table or range.
    4. Choose Insert → PivotTable.
    5. Choose New sheet or Existing sheet, then add the required fields. Excel for the web supports creating and editing PivotTables through this workflow.^1^

This avoids the affected Mac desktop code path and is the most practical option for an upcoming demonstration.

Check for a corrected Excel build

Your installed version, 16.114.3 (26102720), is the October 27, 2026 release.^2^ Its release notes only mention general Excel quality and performance improvements; they do not document a PivotTable-crash fix.^3^

Check for a newer build as follows:

    1. Open Word or another Office application that remains stable.
    2. Select Help → Check for Updates.
    3. In Microsoft AutoUpdate, enable Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date.
    4. Install any Excel update newer than 16.114.3.
    5. Restart Excel and test first with a copy of the workbook.

If Office came from the Mac App Store, open App Store → Updates and update Excel there instead.^4^

There are several public reports of version 16.114.3 crashing during PivotTable creation, refresh, field changes, and PivotTable options.^5^ Microsoft’s published Excel-for-Mac known-issues page does not currently list this specific regression or an official workaround.^6^

    Report the crash

In Excel, select Help → Feedback, report that PivotTable creation crashes Excel 16.114.3 (26102720), and include:

    • The macOS version
    • Whether it also happens in a new workbook with a small local data range
    • The exact action that triggers the crash
    • A screenshot or crash report
    • Permission for Microsoft to contact you, if acceptable

Microsoft documents Help → Feedback as the macOS route for sending an issue to the applicable product team.^7^

    Avoid broad repairs for now

A preference reset, cache deletion, or complete Office reinstall is not the first-line action here because the failure matches other reports tied specifically to PivotTable operations on the same Excel build. Those repairs become reasonable only if Excel also crashes outside PivotTables or continues crashing after a newer build is installed.

A temporary downgrade is also not the preferred route: Microsoft’s update history states that only the most recently released Office for Mac version is supported.^2^ If Excel for the web is unsuitable and a rollback is operationally necessary, use a Time Machine or managed-software restore under administrator control, preserve the workbook first, and prevent automatic reinstallation of 16.114.3 until a fixed build is available.
