    Hi, Richard Farish

It sounds like the box from GCI may be a modem only, without Wi-Fi. That would explain why the internet works over the cable but no wireless network shows up.

Look at the sticker on the back for the model number. Some GCI models, like the Sagemcom FAST 3893E, Hitron CODA-45 and Hitron CDA-3, are listed by GCI as plain cable modems. With those, it is recommended to pair the modem with a GCI Wi-Fi pod (a small Plume SuperPod), which creates the actual wireless signal. GCI provides the pods to internet customers at no extra cost.

If you have a pod, or GCI sends you one, the setup is simple. Run an Ethernet cable from the modem to the port on the pod marked with the special icon, then plug the pod into a power outlet. After that, log in to the AK-Fi Home app with your MyGCI account and finish the setup there.

If you're not sure what you have or you didn't get a pod, call GCI at 800-800-4800 or chat with them on gci.com. Ask them for "a Wi-Fi pod for my cable modem."

Once the pod is running, your other computers should see the new network and connect normally.

Did your router come with an owner's manual? Most do. The beginning of the owner's manual shows you how to setup a secure WiFi network. If you no longer have the owner's manual for your router, tell us the brand name and the model number and we'll look for it on the Internet (or you can do that on your own if you wish.)

Connect each computer to the router’s Wi‑Fi network using the network name (SSID) and password printed on the router; if this is a newer GCI AK‑Fi Home router, finish its wireless setup and view those details in the AK‑Fi Home app.

Set up the GCI router’s Wi‑Fi

    1. Look on the router for a label containing Wi‑Fi Name, Network Name, or SSID, plus a Wi‑Fi Password.
    2. If you received instructions to use AK‑Fi Home:
      • Install and open the AK‑Fi Home app.
      • Sign in with your MyGCI credentials.
      • Complete the gateway setup.
      • In the app, view or change the Wi‑Fi name and password. AK‑Fi uses one network name for compatible 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz devices.^1^ ^2^
    3. Keep the router in a central, elevated location, away from thick walls and large metal objects, for better coverage.
    4. For security, replace default administrator credentials and use WPA3, if both the router and computers support it; otherwise use WPA2.^3^

    Connect each Windows computer

    Windows 11

    1. Select the combined Network/Sound/Battery area at the right end of the taskbar.
    2. Next to Wi‑Fi, select Manage Wi‑Fi connections.
    3. Select the GCI network name and then Connect.
    4. Enter the Wi‑Fi password and select Next.

    Windows 10

    1. Select the Network icon at the right end of the taskbar. If it is hidden, select the Up arrow.
    2. Select the GCI network name and then Connect.
    3. Enter the Wi‑Fi password and select Next.
    4. For a trusted home network, choose Yes if you want the computer discoverable by other devices.^4^

Repeat these steps on every computer that has a wireless network adapter.

If the GCI network does not appear

    • Confirm the router has a Wi‑Fi/Wireless indicator light. If Wi‑Fi is not enabled and this is not an AK‑Fi model, use the setup instructions supplied for that exact GCI router or contact GCI support.^5^
    • On the computer, open Device Manager → Network adapters and look for an adapter containing Wireless, Wi‑Fi, or WLAN. A desktop computer may require a USB or internal Wi‑Fi adapter.^3^
    • If the network appears but will not connect, move closer to the router, re-enter the password carefully, and try the other frequency-band network if separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names are displayed.^6^
