Because the Surface Connect charger’s LED remains off, reset and isolate the power supply first, then test with another compatible charger to determine whether the charger or the laptop needs service.^1^
Reset and test the charger
Since cleaning the connector and resetting the laptop did not help, move to these new checks:
- Disconnect the charger from both the Surface and the wall.
- Disconnect anything plugged into the charger’s USB port and remove all accessories from the laptop.
- Wait at least 10 seconds. This resets the power-supply unit.
- Reconnect the charger directly to a different working wall outlet, avoiding the current power strip or surge protector.
- Insert the Surface Connect plug securely, then turn the connector over 180 degrees and try it in the opposite orientation.
- Check whether its LED becomes solid white. These are Microsoft’s documented steps for an off or flashing Surface Connect LED.^1^
If the light comes on, leave the Surface connected for at least 15 minutes, then press the power button. Disconnect docks, USB devices, monitors, and other accessories during this test.^2^
Do not continue using the charger if its cable, connector, or the laptop’s charging port appears bent, burned, frayed, or otherwise damaged.
Isolate the charger from the laptop
If the LED remains off:
- Test with another compatible genuine Microsoft Surface power supply, if one is available.
- If your particular Surface Laptop supports charging through USB-C, test with a compatible USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger.
- Conversely, test your charger on another compatible Surface if possible.
Use a charger that meets the requirements for the exact Surface Laptop model; Microsoft recommends genuine Microsoft or Microsoft-licensed charging accessories.^3^
Interpret the result as follows:
- Another charger works: replace or submit a service request for the original power supply.
- No compatible charger works: the Surface itself likely requires hardware inspection or service.
- No alternate charger is available: Microsoft’s documented next step is a service order for the power supply rather than Windows driver troubleshooting.^1^
Because the connector LED does not illuminate and the battery is now empty, reinstalling battery drivers is not the useful next step—the laptop first needs a functioning external power source.
